What Midi Keyboard

Hello Gang,
I wonder if anyone could recommend a decent midi-keyboard.
I am using a Creative Prodekeys which is is nearly new and already giving problems.

As some of you will probably know, it's design is quite unique as the unit has musical keys as part computer a computer keyboard and it has a host of goodies that come with it,

Its keys are touch sensitive allowing you to play softly or loudly depending on how much pressure you apply. Already after afew weeks, some keys on the unit are not working correctly and full pressure needs to be applied in order for it to work.

I'm not too suprized at this as it only cost £40 and as they say you only get what you pay for.

I need to upgrade so wondered if you guys have any recommendations.....

Any keyboard that outputs midi...which is just about all of them nowdays. Just find one you like.

Go to a music store and see what they have.

On my web site you'll see I have 2... one is a pro quality Yamaha DX27-S...kinda old, and the other is a Radio Shack that I was given.... it's cheap but it works.

Unless you're a pro keyboardist playing live..... you don't need a top of the line model. Midi is midi to MC4.

Alan, any keyboard will do, as Herb wrote, but look for a name-brand model. My Yamaha works fine, and it's almost 8 years old.
Does your sound card/interface have MIDI connections, or were you going the USB route? Whatever you decide check that you can connect it to what you already have (unless you're planning an interface upgrade).
MIDI controllers are relatively inexpensive, but make no sounds of their own, so you would have to depend on soft synths or MS wavetable synth to hear it. I prefer keyboards that make noise A. because I don't have to load any soft synths to hear it until I'm ready to start mixing down a song and deciding on the final sound I want and 2. On the very unlikely chance that I might want to take it somewhere to play.
EBay is chock-full of used keyboards. Look for Yamaha, Korg, Casio, Roland (Edirol), any brand you've heard of. Before buying, see if the manuals for the devices are included or if they're available online somewhere. If you decide on a Yamaha, and are connecting via USB, you may also have to get the Yamaha MIDI-to-USB converter since Yamahas don't work well with other brands of converters.

Even a radio shack keyboard will work.... and it's not very expensive... I was in a Guitar Center a few weeks ago and they have a few keyboards under $100 USD. That's all you need.

Steve, keen to know how you come on. It certainly looks the part.

Greg, the prodikeys I am using at the moment is running through a usb cable but my sound card has unused midi connectors.
I'll unplug the prodikeys on the usb and use the port for a standard comp keyboard. I only hope that the new midi controller will see the M-Audio connectors......It should do...

I've an old Roland A-33, 70 something keys controller. Very good, though lots more functions than I actually care to use! Your options are cheap-and-springy keys, semi-weighted, and piano-action/weighted. I'd love a decent piano action, but they cost buckets and though great for piano playing, aren't so good for percussion etc. Your cheapest option is utterly naff for expressive playing. A good keyboard from any reputable manufacturer should do well. If you're wanting ot add some flutes or other long drawn out sound, consider a keyboard with Aftertouch that passes on changes in pressure. The best thing with buying instruments is try them if you can, although I wouldn't be scared to buy online at a good price for a deal. There are often lots of reviews to check out.

I looked on Ebay last night and the only mini MIDI keyboards were a couple from someone in Japan. There was an Axiom 25 controller, too, but the bids were already in the neighborhood of the cost of a new one.

This is probably off-topic of what you're looking for, but since shifty mentioned weighted keyboards and said they're expensive, I wanted to point out that the Casio Previa series is a very good sounding digital weighted piano and they are very inexpensive. I got a PX-310 for less than $500 and now the new ones have 128note poly for the same price!

Thanks Greg and Beag. The local store says he has a couple of midi's (1 Casio, 1 Yamaha) coming in for trade ins, they are in good working and arounf 5 years old... No sound though just midi capability...£50 ish or there abouts...Its worth a look anyway...The wife's gonna kill me, Just spent £75 on Jamstix 2 (he he)....Hope I understand it and can get it to work....Had a look at Herb's site, don't think it should be too difficult... If I'm right I use TTS1 as a host for the application.
