Ezduzzit - new mix on new DAW, new software

http://iacmusic.com/songs.aspx?SongID=68697
(heavy mix)

or

http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2302&alid=-1
(lighter mix)

there's a lot going on here....
my first full mix on the new DAW i just built-
which is super duper fast!

the software's all new--

updated from 4PE to Sonar 6 PE......
and Wavelab 6, for mastering.

tho, i gotta say, i still dig the sonitus efx for mastering my tunes.

but i gotta at least make an attempt to use wavelab.......

so, this is a quick mix, mixed at 24 bit/44.1khz, dropped into wavelab, and run thru several plugins-
3 band eq, 4 band compression, stereo enhancement, and then limiting.
dithered to 16 bit, then ripped to 256 mp3 with CDEX.

truely, i didn't even crack the book on the wavelab software and am totally clueless!
LOL
but, i dove in anyway, here's the result.
i'd love any tips on getting started...

my guess is, now i'll actually sit down with the manual, and figure out how to use it for real.

drums are Toontracks Ezdrummer.

Hey, Gonzo! Another great bat's brew tune! always love your guitar playing!

your guitars have great tone, but they seem to be occupying the same space in the song. you might want to think about carving out some frequencies for each of them to sit in. and they also seem quite compressed - I know this genre typically you would do that, but maybe leave a little dynamics on it? just a suggestion, tho.

also - there's a pop at the end of the song.

drums sound really nice! and again - I love your fast fingers! really nice chops!

    thanks beagle!

well, the rhythm guitars are panned hard left and right, so i don't know what else i can do to seperate them...

the solo guitar is straight up the middle...
and the harmonies to the solo guitar are a little left, and right......
there's no compression on any of the guitars....
    other than amplifier compression.

could be the mastering squished it!!

i don't hear any pop at the end of my file, could be the streaming or on the mp3 only......?

many things i need to tweak on this one, for sure....
i spent 30 minutes on the mix!
    LOL

i just wanted to see how it was going to sound....
maybe i'll throw up the sonitus version of the same mix, and see how they play against each other.....

the wavelab version was definitely louder, with more sheen and bells and whistles...
but i like the sonitus version better, personally....

Excellent guitar work and good mix. I enjoyed it but felt the tune could have easily been a little bit longer.

    tcaylor-
    thanks for checking it out....
it's a short instrumental, for sure...
seems that people that LIKE instrumentals, want em longer...
and other people who just put up with my instrumentals, like em short and sweet.
    LOL

ok, here's a new mix with a different wavelab application:

    http://www.nowhereradio.com/artists/album.php?aid=2302&alid=-1

you can stream, or download, from nowhere radio.
    download's always better.....

this one is not as loud as the other wavelab version.....
but, i think it's more balanced.

so now, i gotta figure out how to do balanced, and louder.

    LOL

This sounded AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've gotta say, I like the way you let the lead guitars breath in between the riffs, that's something I need to learn to do instead of just continuing to keep on playing the same line for the entire tune.

GREAT WORK!!!!!!! Thanks for the listen!

Cool groove with excellent guitar tones and playing. Loved the ending with the tremelo bar - nice touch

Mix sounds great on my rig - full and rich.

    thanks man!

"I like the way you let the lead guitars breath in between the riffs, that's something I need to learn to do instead of just continuing to keep on playing the same line for the entire tune"

melodies, just think melodies instead of riffs...
and think of playing riffs as if you're speaking sentences. short distinct riffs, that stand alone.....
then develop cool ways to end one riff, and start the next one, with a breath of fresh air inbetween!
    LOL
i wank too, when i'm practicing..
but when the red light comes on, i'm editing, baby!
    LOL
    thanks for listening....

    glad you dig it...
the trem bar, i try not to use it too much...
and when i do, i try to sneak it in there, in such a way that it's not predictable, or sound too obvious.
some of my 'bends', are actually pullups on the bar....
and i do 'pre-bends' with the bar, that continue with actual played bends, so it's one big bendy thing!
    LOL
i still think i can improve the mix....

    Great instrumental and top playing.

I loved the ryhthm guitars at 0.45 and overall feel of the track is superb.

    thanks ben!

    the peavey....

    ah yes!
nope, i sold it after i had it for about 2 months.

it was fine for what it was....

but, it didn't give me anything that my boogie wasn't already supplying, so i let it go for what i had in it.

this song, features a mesa boogie Mark 2B 60 watt head, w/GEQ, into a roland 1x12 closed back cab loaded with a celestion greenback.
close miced, with combinations of a SM57 and a AT4033.
