Recording Vocals

In my never-ending quest to improve my thin voice, I came across this site. Lots of very good information about a lot of stuff in the recording space...

Interesting stuff.... or so it looks... I don't have time right now to check it out.... seems to present the info with a sense of humor attached as well....

I'm all for learning as much as possible about recording...however, many people read all this stuff about mics, compressors, gates, limiters, EQ, and get totally confused or worse...try to incorporate ALL these things into their newest project.... and end up with a big mess. I'm not saying don't try..... because by all means...do try.... but try it one thing at a time. Nothing confuses worse than adding three or four new things at the same time and then trying to figure out which one (or ones) are screwing up the mix.

As you add... add one thing at a time.... it must imporve the mix.... even if only slightly.... if not..take it out.

In addition, when using stuff like compressors and limiters, ... the change from before to after should generally be so little as to not really notice a difference in the overall sound. If you can hear a difference after adding those 2...you've probably gone to far with them. (not always...but generally)

There is alot of stuff to learn about just recording Vox.... so dig in and learn it.

My goal in recording vox is to have a single vox track...no doubling... and have it sound good dry.

I agree with you on the approach Herb - being a person who is "patience challenged" its pretty dang easy to start flipping all the switches at once to get a good sound a quickly as possible, but it is MUCH more helpful to understand "WHY" we do things and "WHAT" those things do to the audio clip "under the covers", which is why I posted this link. Its gives a very good description of what Compression is, how it works, and why you want to use it.

right after I bought my TC Helicon Voicelive I was fiddling around with all the cool harmonies it is capable of producing. Right about that time my wife and I went to a beach bar and saw a rather talented band using one of these li'l gadgets. It was horrible! There was one woman up there singing backup vocal and every time she got near the mic we were blasted with a 4 piece choral arrangement that just didn't belong in "Brown-Eyed Girl"...

Note to self - learn how to use the right tool in the right amount in the right situation. Just because you have a hammer, not everything is a nail....

    Wait....wait...

Pay no attention to what Herb said. Push all of the buttons, open up more effects, three compressors in a row and stuff, then come in to the forum and tell us all the crazy things the computer did on its way to the blue screen of death...

As you may have guessed, a slow day at work, so I'm a little bored....

Even "I" knew that one! See, I treat you all nicely (at least I try to...I'm might whine or vent periodically, but I think I do it nicely; well maybe not to myself, but to others) and I'm learning!!!

I had another little victory with the software today, following the advice on the post I put up that started this thread - you all probably knew how to do this already but it was like a light came on for me using the software. I wanted to add more reverb to the vocal mix in the headphones, yet record it dry, so I added a stereo bus to the project, and routed the output of the vocal audio track to that bus, then added studioverb to that bus - simple!

I know that seems pretty trivial, but it helped to solidify some of my understanding of busses, sound path, etc.

So the next question - If I upgrade to Sonar Home Studio 7 XL, how much does the interface change? Does it take long to adapt?

If you are very clever and really adept at understanding the subtle changes and nuances in the atmospheric and latitudinal biospheres of musical interludes i would say about 3. 0968 minutes.

MG, it's similar enough that you shouldn't have any problems. Plus it's changable; if you don't like the way it looks you can change it's appearance. At least with SHS 6 you can.

SHS7 has some bugs. it was not thoroughly beta tested, IMO. in fact the product manager pretty much told us on the SHS forum that it was NOT beta tested by any of the SHS6 users because they did not receive responses back from those they offered beta testing to (even tho several of them said specifically they responded more than one way!). She said that it was tested by FOUR Sonar users and NO native SHS users.

there are no reported bugs which would stop one from using the software to record (to my knowledge). there's one major bug reported which has a workaround: when inserting a softsynth you can't choose multiple outputs or it will crash the audio engine. No one has yet confirmed taht the new GUI doesn't allow you to resize the tracks below a certain rather largish size (see http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/HomeStudio/English/overview.htm ). that's not a bug, but an annoyance and rather "cheapens" the feel of SHS, IMO.

they are supposed to be working on a revision, but no one has said when there might be an expected date for release.

Thanks Herb and Robo..thanks...it's nice to know that I belong here!

Mitch, I just upgraded to SHS 7XL and I was just starting to get a handle on MC 4. The transition has been pretty good for me. Sure the layout is a bit different, but I starting recording right away. I don't know what some of the add on's are yet and stuff, but I will get there. My biggest problem is I keep inadvertently recording over tracks! I've done this so many times. So not I click the arm button in the bottom bar to make sure all arm tracks are off and select the one I want.

The niciest part about it is they still let us hang out here!
