Best display for Sonar user

One of my 19 inc died last night. I would like to buy wide screen display so i can see my tracks without touching them

Even i tried (for 10 minutes) 30 inc display, i want to ask you

"Is it too big one 30 inc?"
"Is it too big two 24 inc?"
"Is it enough one 24 inc?"

Which size best?

I use 2 22" displays. Not too big at all. I would to with 2 24's or even 2 30's.

    I just went from one 19" to a 24" (samsung 2443bw)
Lots of real estate - and if they ever get Xray debugged, I don't need 2

    My 2 cents

Without knowing how you like to work there are no definitive answers...I use two 24" monitors (could probably get by with two 20" or 22" just as easily) because I can and I'm comfortable with the setup...Disregarding size, I'll never go back to one monitor again...A minimum of dual monitors is the only way I wish to work (I'm actually considering stepping up to three monitors as I contemplate how I want my 2009 system configured)...

Your budget and your typical workflow needs, not the opinions of forum members, should be the determining factor in your decision...

I definitely like 2 displays but i am worry about the size. Imagine you are traveling from one corner to another on 2X30 inc. After so many inc, that would give you trouble or i can't imagine because never used

Thats why i asked you people. It seems people happy with 2X24

...worry about the size. Imagine you are traveling from one corner to another...

I recently upgraded from a 4:3 19" to a widescreen 24" (Dell 2408WFP). It's great for Sonar and for anything else that often requires left-right scrolling. However, it often seems too big for some things, particular anything primarily text-based. I had to change my mouse mat because the old one didn't allow sufficent left-right movement. My wife and stepdaughter both hate the new monitor.

I use 1x 22" widescreen in the center between 2x 19" monitors. I put tracks on the center monitor when I'm editing. Console on the center monitor with tracks on the left monitor when I'm mixing. Effects, Softsynths etc. go to my right monitor. It's a little redundant to have both tracks and console open at the same time but it makes me feel warm and comfy to see them there when I need them.

Key Bindings make it so easy to switch between the two....Why not use the extra "real estate" for something that actually matters?

I've thought about that, but I can't think of anything else to use the real estate for. I suppose I could have tons more effects windows or something ...

I just had an extra 19" monitor and thought I'd try it out. It turns out I like it.

I don't know why, but I like having the track view always visible. It's all in my head, I know ...

I like a single monitor because I like to always look straight ahead as I work. (I can't imagine looking to the left 90% of the time at the track view and to the right 10% of the time for console (or whatever), but that's just me, and I totally understand that everyone works differently, and that we all get used to things after a while.)

But back to the original question. LCD monitor prices are dropping. My advice is to buy the biggest single LCD that you can afford, and "live large". Mine's a 36" (or something like that), and I love it.

I just replaced my old 19" CRT with a 26" LCD monitor. WHOA! What an incredible difference. Trying to edit audio on a 19" CRT is like trying to do it while looking through a knot hole in a fence.
Why didn't I buy that 26" monitor before? Oh yes, I remember now, because it was too damn expensive. However, I saw Fry's had a 1-day deal on the 26" LCD monitor for $270 a few weeks ago, so I jumped on it. I should have grabbed 2 of them.
Anyway, the best thing to do (in my opinion) is to keep your eyebone on the TechBargains web site TechBargains and then click on the link there where it says Cheap LCD Displays. They track all the best deals around on LCD displays. Makes it easy to see when a good deal pops up.

I just replaced my two 19" standard LCDs with a 37" HD LCD TV. Using a DVI to HDMI cable and Windows XP recognized the appropriate settings (1920 x 1080 @ 60hz). I had to adjust the sharpness to zero (go figure) and backlight and brightness way down to get everything to look good.

It's actually a little too big for how far I sit ~4' (white backgrounds are really bright!), but when I get the next studio set up (currently in-between homes) I'll be further back and everything should be perfect.

I was worried about the loss of screen-estate, but I'm quite happy with it. With the two 19" I had 2600 pixels of width and now only have 1900 pixels -- that's several channels!

The two big bonuses are that the monitor is behind the speakers, and I don't have to contend with the bezel in-between monitors. I know a lot of people aren't bothered by the bezel, but it drove me nuts.

If I had two wide screens I would think top-bottom layout would be better than side by side. No center bezel. How do you dual wide screen people lay yours out?

I'll pipe in here with my conclusions...

I've been using a single 22" monitor (HP 2207) for the past 10 months, and I'm very happy with it. In normal landscape mode, the pixel resolution is 1680x1050 (width x height). I used to have a 19' Dell LCD, which ran at 1280x1024, so the 22" is about 1/3 wider than the old screen, but allows only a taskbar's more height. I often find myself wanting more rows in the Track View, but I still think the extra cost of the 24" over the 22", which was almost twice as much last year, isn't justified.

So, I'm considering the addition of a twin HP 2207 22" LCD monitor, and configuring both in the portrait orientation, which would increase my Windows desktop resolution to 2100 x 1680 pixels.

I also like the idea of 2 monitors because it will reduce my downtime. Having 2 large monitors, I can use the surviving monitor alone, albeit with limited resolution, when the first monitor fails.

    +1

I didn't go into the 24" setup either because, at the time I got my two 22" Samsungs, buying them was almost the same price as one 24" monitor. So it was a no brainer to go with two 22" monitors instead. Plus I'm loving the dual monitor setup. I, like others who's said the same, could never go back. But, if you can find a good deal on dual 24" screens then go for it. Bigger is always better :-) Be ware of resolution too. The higher, the more realstate you'll gain. Otherwise, things will just look bigger. And make sure the highest resolution is the native resolution.

    Take care!

    I have a 17" laptop running at 1920 X 1200 resoultion and 2 X 20" LCD monitors running off a MATROX Dual Head to Go card at 3360 X 1050 across the 2.

The different resolutions work well because the laptop is directly in front of me and the 2 LCD's are above and behind the laptop between the audio monitors. The black frame of 2 side by side monitors doesn't biother me anymore. After a while your eyes seem to adjust and you just don't notice. What took a while to master was working left to right then up and left to right as in my picture. But that's OK now too and everything has become quite intuitive.

I'd also say the more, and the bigger, the better. I use 4x 17" 4:3 monitors (see me avatar) and believe that multi-monitor setups are heavily overlooked as a beneficial DAW upgrade. I'd advise to just get what suits your needs, and what you can afford. You can obviously add more monitors in the future anyway (I went from 2 to 3 then eventually 4)!!

I use 2 28" HannsG monitors. I think they were like $500 each or so.

It is a lot of real estate. My default tracking setup has something like this
Track view on far left on left screen - taking up about 70% wide and 90% high
    Transport below that
Marker view and synth rack on the left monitor in that 30% space to the right of the track view
Right monitor - default to console view with all options except EQ controls enabled, narrow strips.

Then if I open a plug, I move it over the console view while I am working with it.

Frankly, I would love to have 4 of those. I have 4 24" monitors at work and have a really difficult time when I have to use my pathetic 15" screen laptop.

That's a great deal, but just to clarify, it's not an HDTV (television), but a monitor. Tech Bargain (or OfficeMax) obviously missed the error.

Does anyone know how long LCD last these days?

My Trinitron CRTs seem good for 6 to 10 years. I'm in the market for a LCD monitor and am having trouble justifying an higher end expensive LCD because it's my impression the lifespan is 2-3 years.

I'm currently using a 1900x1200 Trinitron that I borrowed from my video suite for my DAW... so I'm not going with anything lower res.

I vacillate between getting an 30" Apple Cinema display or just getting 2 of the cheapest 20" LCDs I can find.

FWIW, this is a sincere question... I just don't know what the expected lifespan is. My first and only LCD lasted 1-1/2 years before I had to buy a new LCD to install in the chassis.

    best regards,
    mike

My 3-year old Dell 1905FP 19" monitor is still working fine. Also, at work, we have several 5-year old Dell monitors still in use. I have never seen one fail yet (except once, but that was a brand new one).

    ORIGINAL: My Favorites

One of my 19 inc died last night. I would like to buy wide screen display so i can see my tracks without touching them

Even i tried (for 10 minutes) 30 inc display, i want to ask you

"Is it too big one 30 inc?"
"Is it too big two 24 inc?"
"Is it enough one 24 inc?"

    Which size best?

I use two 22 inch monitors and it's nice. But I can't seem to fit all the sends and EQ in the console view without scrolling. I think two 24's would have eliminated that. I would definitely go with two 24's, IMO. However, if you can squeeze two 30's, I do think you would be in heaven.
