v drum users controller question

OK so I've got the hihat opening and closing and in piano roll view I can see the vertical lines in the control channel. My question is how do I change when or how the hihat opens etc. I can't seem to lasso the whole system of bars (like in the cell phone commercial) to just move it. Can you tell me how you do it? Thanks Ara www.aratunes.us

Or secondly, can you draw in an opening hihat by adding controller lines to an already existing series of hihat notes, maybe you have to change the note to a different one in the piano roll that allows for the open sound but thats easy. Ara

I don't have the answer but the best way to find out I think would be to record a few highhat hits by themselves and take a look at exactly whats being recorded and it's relationship to what is heard and then experiment. If you haven't already I would set the TD6 to ThinPedalData so that there isn't so much data being sent when the hat is opened and closed (there are 3 different settings available).

Hi ara. I also use vdrums, so am interested in the answer to this question. The person that will probably have the answer is CJ. I'm sure he'll respond when he sees this.

It's actually pretty complicated to move something like this. It's easier to be a little surgical. The hi-hat openness is determined by the note number and the controller #4 value. If you want a half open hat, you can just insert an edge or bow open hit note and a cc#4 at the location you want with a value of 64 and delete any other cc#4 data around it. You will want the controller value to preceed the hit. You can draw curves for this, but as you can see in recorded midi data, they happen very quickly. While they potentially could cause it to sound unnaturral, used sparingly it's fine. I wouldn't program the whole track like that, but for spot fixes, it should do fine.

Also, you need to be careful about moving snares around (at least on the TD-20, with the positional sensing), as the cc#16 is what determines position on the head and it really needs to stay aligned with the snare hit it's intended it was originally paired with. Of course, this is really a little less than practical, but you CAN hear it sometimes and it shows up as a little "phasing" sound.

Blades, thanks Yeah sometimes I want hihat to open /close for just the last eighth rather than a quarter- or vise versa... or sometimes due to quantizing the notes may get pulled away from the controll data. I could go and rerecord but just would rather move something around with the cursor. Ara www.aratunes.us ps. Thanks dke, what are the pros/cons of thinning the pedal data?

Near as I can hear there are no detrimental effects to thinning pedal data. I use the medium setting, it just cuts down on the number of CC events which according to my TD6 manual says can possibly overwelm the midi interface when recording, which could lead to dropped notes etc..
