Strangely Dull?

Hey,

Have you all ever had a certain mix just sound strangely dull for no appraent reason? The last song I've been working with ("Bring Me Close To You") over on the Songs forum, sounded really, really dull and I was kicking up the highs ALOT to compensate. I got it better but it's still off a little. Anyway, I opened a few other projects to have a listen, and they had the proper hi end content, both on the analyzer and in my ears and they had very little high end boost. Nothing in my room has changed and I'm using all the same stuff. I'm not sure what happened on the last tune, but I'm just going to reset everything on it and mix it from scratch...it just seemed weird when I compared it to other projects.

I haven't listened to your tune yet, but is everything recorded directly thru a preamp?

This is the same rig I've used for other songs that didn't turn out this dark and dull, and my room/monitors are all the same. Everything patches into an RME Multiface II. I'm not sure what happened to cause this.

    These are all the tracks:

    1. Lead vocal (Onyx preamp)
    2. Acoustic lead (Onyx preamp)
    3. Piano (K2661)
    4. Pad (K2661)
    5. Drums (Stylus RMX)
    6. Bass (Dimension Pro)

When I get home this evening I'm going to reset the mix and watch is really carefully.

When that has happened to me I've found it was trhe "total" picture vs. any one single thing.

IOW, many overlapping frequencies in various instuments such that boost/cut wasnt'r good enough.

I'll suggest to start by cutting mid-range from pad & piano and see where that gets you.

In my case when it happens, it's usually my high frequency hearing failing on me.

This did happen to me not long ago. It turned out to be a case of overcompression on a critical bus (not the main bus, though, which is why it stumped me for a minute). I had inadvertently turned the threshold way down, causing all the little dynamic "hairs" to disappear from some instruments. The EQ was still there, but the song sounded like a worn-out cassette tape.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.
