Line 6 UX1 vs UX2

hi all,

I am trying to decide which would be most benefical to purchase ,UX1 or 2. I'm asking anyone that has used either to tell me if ux2 is worth the price over ux1. I need a guitar input and a mic input. all extras after that may not be needed. thanks for the input in advance!

    Hi Bill

I'd hold fast for the moment and do a bit of research (don't worry, we'll help you!) - Line 6 seems to be undergoing a bit of a 'refurbishment' at the moment.

They've just launched a new set of hardware devices and compatible software under the general heading of POD Farm.

I just looked up the TonePort UX2 (that's what I use) on the Line 6 site and it's listed under 'Vocals' for some reason.

I can't say at this stage whether it would be best to get a TonePort now or wait and see how the POD Farm stuff develops - you might get right bargain if the TonePorts come down in price as the other stuff is phased in but we can't know how future software developments may go. Saying that, it's very unlikely that they'll make the TonePorts redundant - there are just too many people using them.

I'll have a little poke around and see what I can make of it all.

    Steve

with the marshall and fender amps and the yamaha samples I don't think I really need the UX2. But I haven't laid down any vocals yet either so that may change my mind.

I've been using the UX1 for about three years for guitar, bass, and vox. I'm very happy with it. But I have been considering the POD FArm simply for the ability to split the signal and run a combination of amps, and it's only $50. Hard to resist. But then I'd have to spend a bunch of time tweaking presets again. Not like that's a bad thing, it's time restraints that are the bad thing

    A few guitars, a couple of basses, a MIDI controller, a mandolin, a banjo, a mic, PodFarm2

Hey Mark, did you get the Gold Bundle for your TonePort?

If you did, the upgrade to POD Farm is free, I downloaded mine at the weekend and it appears to be the 'Platinum' version - the one they're flogging for $250.

Dave, a plug-in, often called a VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plug-in, is simply a bit of software that emulates a hardware effect or processor, such as reverb, delay, distortion, EQ etc.

In GT3, these effects plug-ins can be added to recorded audio in the Mix View.

For a complete explanation of how to install and then use VST's, click on THIS LINK to go to a recent thread all about the subject.

You should be able to run the POD Farm in 'stand-alone' mode to record using its amps/effects straight into GT3 already; to use the plug-in version that came with your download, you'll need to use the VST Adapter to scan it before you can use it - this is all explained in the thread I've linked to above but if you need any more help, ask away!

    Hi Steve
I followed the thread you outlined. Pod farm is in my PC and when I followed all that was suggested when I opened up GT3 again I went to the effects bin of a track right clicked but had no option for VST.
    Am I missing something?

Dave, I haven't got time now I'm afraid, but if I see you around later we'll try and walk you through using the VST Adapter - scanning a VST or two might force GT3 to show the option for you.

In the meantime, can you list down what options you do get when you right click in an FX bin, including sub menus.

You need to click on Audio Effects to find the options; you should at least see GT:FX and inside that menu, Echo, Modulate, Phaze, Q, Squeeze and Verb - these are the effects bundled and pre-installed with GT3.

    Catch you later Dave

When I open GTP3 I go to the screen above. Is there a dialog box that is supposed to pop up after or before that screen? or is this the correct one?

Most of the stuff that accumulates in their somehow seems to get associated with GT when it installs, possible because it is audio related in some way or other (I see you have Roxio, hard luck!).

What you'll find is that if you try to load some of this stuff, you'll get a message saying in one or another that it won't work in GT3; it will also give you the option to remove it from the list permanently - for the time being, I'd just close them off.

You don't say where you are Dave so it's difficult for me to say a time when we can both spend half an hour or so on your VST's; it's 5.00pm GMT in the UK now, I'll more than likely be about in an hour or so if you're about - then I just have to pop down the pub and make sure the ale is up to standard!

Bill, it's funny you mention that - in every other piece of Cakewalk software I've got (5) I get a screen allowing me to open the last project or a new one etc.

I can't ever remember having had that in GT3 - I did get the Tips screen, which I've turned off.

Be interesting to see if anyone knows how to get it to appear - it can be kind of handy.

(Dave - good idea, we'll stop hijacking Bill's thread - no need to start a new one, I'll see you in the Wow-got it all to work thread)
