A BFD Problem

Hi guys (and gals)

I'm currently using BFD Lite to get my drum tracks down, as in my opinion, the sounds are so much better than I've managed to achieve with SD2.

Being the Lite version, BFD only offers a single Stereo output, so I'm running that straight into SONAR.

Now, my problem is this - in the BFD interface, when you click on an individual drum, clicking left <> right produces different timbres which I thought were due to the velocity of the pad.

Applying different velocities within SONAR's PRV however don't produce the different timbres I was expecting - they just change in volume, nothing else.

Am I missing the point? Is there another controller type that I should be using to gnerate the subtle variations nedded to make a drum sound more authentic.

As a side issue, Santa's bringing me BFD2, so hopefully this is just a short term problem that I'm facing.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions

When programming in PRV it should still give you the different timbres. Are you CERTAIN that the timbre isn't changing? The easiest way to test would be to use the cymbal note, and place a hit at 20, 40, 60, 80, 100, 120 with a spacing of a measure and have a listen to it. Cymbals are probably the easiest to tell. If the timbre is clearly not changing there then something is wrong... Have a look at the settings in the interface and see if there is something screwing it up. There is an option called 'anti-machinegun mode'. Make sure that's on as it will ensure timbres are being changed.

Cheers Matt - I will look when I get home.

I did try this with a snare, but with the results I posted above.

The thing is, the variation in timbre within BFD itself is enormous!!!

You get variations from a gentle sidestick tap to full on John Bonham hits.

It sounds almost as though a different set of samples is bring used.

One other question - could the choice of Drum Map be confounding the issue?
I'm currently using a generic GM map, which does at least respond to all of the pieces in my chosen kit.

I don't know about the drum maps idea. It shouldn't affect it. But then again, I never use drum maps so I am no pro with them. Try just working straight with the midi track that is created. Click with your pen tool and move it around till you find the crash note. Then do as explained in the last post. If it's working there and not in the map then something is going on with the map.. Can't think how it should affect it though. Maybe someone with more experience there can help out. Let us know your results when you get back to your DAW.

Matt - I tried again last night and for some reason, I can now detect different timbres with different velocity settings in the PRV.

And that was with the existing drum map in place.

Curious as to why it didn't work and first, and now it does.

Ah well - roll on Xmas

Well, glad to hear it ended up working for you! No idea why it would do that though
