Keep it Simple

I realized that I wrote this riff about 19 years ago, about when I was 'cough', 'cough' 12 (yeah, that's it 12)

One of the versions is without horns, so I need feedback on whether to keep or fire the horn section.

Also, need feedback on the mix, guitar EQ, and the song itself and anything else.

Keep It Simple

Keep It Simple (no horns)

very cool, Jon! I really like this! Nice thumpin' bass and really cool guitar riffs! love the organ, too! (although it might be just a WENCE hot). the drums sound really good, but I might brighten up that kick just a tad, too.

Actually between the two, it seems like YOU want the horn section fired! I almost missed them in the first version because you've got them buried so far in the mix that they're almost gone anyway. so IF you're going to leave them, I'd at least give them some stage time, but if you're gonna fire 'em, then fire 'em completely!

good work - I do really like this!

You wrote this when you were 12? Wow!

OK, I admit--I could barely hear the horns either. Sorry.

I wondered if maybe the snare was a tiny bit too loud or something. But maybe it's just me. Wait for the experts to listen!

    Great job!

Yep, they started complaining about their part also...so I've brought them up in the mix. I've also pulled back the keys as well.

I wondered if maybe the snare was a tiny bit too loud or something
I tried to bring back the snare some (being that it's a sound loop I tried to EQ it back).

Janet and Beagle - Thanks for listening!

I'm sorry your playing was soooooo smokin I didn't even notice the horns. Man if you don't already do this you should be a studio muscian. That was just a great tune horns or no horns.

Whoa! Great riff Jon, you've been sitting on that all this time? Great stuff, smoking leads too. I didn't mind the horns at all, they made a nice counterpoint to the guitars' could bring 'em up in the mix a touch though.

    Ha! Cool chromatic riffs!

Drums seem a tad dry, but that's just me.
I think I'd bring the main riff up a little, maybe even just some EQ to make it cut through the cool bass line.

This was fun to listen to.

    Jon,

The horns were definately incidental to this....not necessary as it's the riff that carries this one. Nice guitar playing and very good mix.

Kev - Wow, thanks for the compliment. Funny you mention studio musician, because I wanted to do just that in my younger days. I was considering going to G.I.T. (Hollywood, CA) then off to 'studio land', but ended up not doing that - did the college thing and "making a living"

Hey James I appreciate the listen. Sounds like the horns are a good, subtle, compliment to the song. I just added them to the song before posting so I wasn't sure if they were going to fit.

Jamz - Thanks for the listening. I was playing with the EQ on the guitar riff part and was thinking of how would the Mr. JamzOz tweak this. It still seems a tad to middy for my liking. But when I take out too much of the mid, I end up ducking the riff - hard to find the right balance. I think I'll be sending you this song for some tweaking if you don't mind. Oh, and thanks again for listening.

Hey Larry - I re-recorded all of the guitar parts with my Gibson, you know the one I got counseling from you on BTW-I'm still icing my forehead from the snowball you threw at me, and the rest of the posters, from your OT post.

Rick - Thanks for the feedback. I think I might hold onto the horns for now. But I could go either way.

Listening to no-horns. I like the song :-) The rhythm part of the lead sounds a little muddy, the lead part of the lead, with the brighter sound sounds great.

Listening to the horns, that synth horn seems to help offset some of the muddiness I was getting in that one guitar part without it there?

So if I can vote, I vote to be horny…

I would loose the horn and the organ and replace it with a piano that counters the rhythm guitar part.

The rest of the song is really cool, love the interplay of harmonies.

    Cheers

Wow, smokin guitars & groovin drums. What an awesome tune!

Horns...? Hang em. The song has a great organic feel to it, so the synth horns seem a tad out of place. Now if you could get some REAL horn players, dude, that would freaking phantasmagoricccc

I like the organ, but I think it needs a spinning leslie to keep up with the other instruments. I mean, the tone sounds great as-is, but without the swirl of a leslie it sounds a little too dead compared to everything else which is really cookin.

Or like foxy sez, a piano would be great if you get funkeh

Man I wish I could write stuff like that 19 years ago.
Hell I wish I could write stuff like that today.

Rockin jam for sure. Super playing, absolutely love that riff.

The mix is a mess, I am afraid...
I wish there was a loudness button on my computer I could turn off to hear what's actually going here.
Drums are super squashed; and the tune could use some multiband compression, especially on the low end.

Robby Odd how the addition of the horns cleans up the main guitar part...I'll take whatever I can get - thanks for listening!

Shad - I'll try replacing the stuff with piano and see how that sounds. Thanks for the feedback and giving it a listen.

SD - If I can get horns players to play for the same money that I pay the TTS-1, I'm in and yes that would be phantasmagoricccc - that's the exact word that I was thinking. Boy, you ain't kidding about the Leslie. They sound great with a B3 (real B3 that is). I tried to add some other stuff, because normally, I have guitar, bass and drums and that's it to my songs. Regarding the 19 years ago, the problem is I only get a great riff like that every 19 years . Thanks for the comment and taking the time to listen.

Hey James - I appreciate the feedback. Lets see if JamzOr can help the song out a bit.
Drums are super squashed; and the tune could use some multiband compression, especially on the low end.
I wish I could say, "Gotcha, I'll fix that tonight", but in reality it's deer in the headlights. Not that I don't understand what you're saying, but not sure how to go about it. I'm awaiting the funds for a stack of mixing books...it's a hurry up and wait game. So hopefully, I can rely on others for help in the interim.

The guitar performances are outstanding! Superb hooks, superb sounds.

The horns are a little low in the mix especially in perspective with the organ! Bass is really cool. The drums need more ambiance but the hats and cyms are cool as is. Slight timing issue at 1.17 although hardly noticeable.

NotNat - Thanks for giving the song a listen. I like that you like the tone, a never ending quest for a guitarist.

SongCraft - Thanks for the comments. I'll look into the timing issue and thanks for the listening.
