Hollow Canyon - Instrumental Guitar/Piano/Violin

I had the day off with the kids today for V-day and had some time to work a little more on this one. This is my first recording with HS7XL and I am still having issues with mixing. However some of the aspects of the new interface are pretty easy to navigate.

Feel free to comment at will. Any and all suggestions are always appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Notnat. I am hopeful to revisit the mix though, certainly the end is lame. What about the tone of the acoutic guitar? Any thought on improvements?

I'm not crazy about the tone, sounds like the bridge PU... Try a mic in addition to the PU...

Listen to the guitars on my tune "Grover & Becky" they were recorded using a Baggs Dual Source (Mic & PU)...

Nik -The guitar sound isn't all that bad, but, I would have preferred it mic'd. (ya think?) It's all about tone anyways... Now to the real meat.. Sweet song! I'm in awe of your violin skills and the technique. Other than the git, I liked everything about this tune. An excellent composition!

Notnat: thanks I'm listening to Grover & Becky right now. Wonderful mix and very well put together. I here you on the tone.

Ihansen: Thanks again and yes I agree with both of you. BTW don't listen too closely to the violin. There are multiple mistakes on the current take!

I'm running both the guitar(gibson J-185) and the violin (Jordan 7 string electric) through a boss GT-10 using the acoustic processer. I don't have a mic, so I'll play a little more with that tone and fix the ending. Hopefully I can update before the weekend.

    Woah....

OK you just put the Bose into high gear with that bass. Holy Low Batman!

Sweet sweet song. You are a man after my own heart, with way more talent.

Thank you for the listen. I enjoyed that a lot.

    Cheers

Beautiful violin - dang, I'm listening now - just fantastic. I'm also not crazy about the acoustic guitar tone. This is a well written tune - very well recorded.

    I love it.

Wow! You play the violin!? That is one incredibly difficult instrument to play! And you are tearing it up! *respect*.

I like the tune, it showcases your talent. I like the subsonic bass, the tone of that guitar with the chorus (both of them). Only thing, that piano needs more presence in the mix (IMO) and sounds a little dry? In comparison with the other instruments? Maybe some reverb? Gentle compression? And a little more volume? The whole tune just sounds so good, I think with a richer piano sound, it would shine like a diamond!

Really incredible playing on that violin, just damn…

Shad: Thanks a bunch for the listen. Yes I am a fan of that ultra low tone.

Rampdog: Funny you should comment on the mix. I swear with me it is hit or miss. I've made some pretty horrible mixes before.

Clean and Mamabear: Thanks so much.

Robby: Yes I play, that is why I was so interested in your new guitar - get that bow out! And thanks for the suggestions. I'm shy with the piano because I suck so bad it.

    Nikolas,

Your performance on the violin is exquisite - that was a pleasure to listen to, and it sounded wonderful in the mix.

As some of the other posters mentioned, the acoustic guitar sound is not ideal - personally I would prefer you mic your acoustic for this - it would make a big difference, JMO.

The piano could be heard more because I like what you're playing there.

Perhaps a bit more reverb, to my ears, would add space and depth to this mix.

Great tune and I enjoyed the listen,
    Doug

Nice. The effect on the violin works well with what it's playing, but seems to be in a whole other universe than the other instruments. It also is too loud...pull back on the db and the effect.

Nick - this is really great! I love listening to someone who can play violin! and this is really well done. I agree with james that the reverb you've got on the violin puts it in a different field than the rest of the instruments and makes the song kind of "bipolar."

    beautiful playing and nice sounds!

Nice. OK, the guitar tracks sounds a bit "electronic", as others have pointed out. But so what. It kind of adds a certain "flavor".
As another poster mentioned, the violin is extremely difficult to play properly. You've mastered it very nicely.
I actually think the "reverb space" for your violin is fine -- it needs to be large and wet, or the part is going to sound like a squeaky child's toy.
    Lovely, peaceful ending.

Thanks for all the input so far folks!

Doug: Thanks for the nice comment on my violin - I really enjoy the instrument and have a ton to learn. I'm taking lessons again for the first time in 28 years. I will try your suggestion on the piano piece.

Jamesyoyo: Yes I agree. I need to tone that back a tad. I was shooting for the violin to be out there with the reverb/delay, but not that far out there.

Beagle: Thankyou, maybe I am Bi-polar!

Zgraf: Well the more I hear the guitar part the more I want to change it. I wish I could master the violin, I should have never stopped playing. After College I took a break from violin that unfortunately lasted until I was 40 (I'm 43 now). I don't think I will change the "reverb space" on the violin as I agree with you, but rather pull it down in volume a notch and open up the space around the guitar and piano parts a little.

Looks like I will be upgrading to 8SE from 7XL now, so I may wait to make changes, or just start from scratch once I get 8.

Stunning violin playing Nikloas, that high sustained note @ 1:38 made the hairs on my arms stand up, just beautiful. Lovely tune too, very dramatic and yearning.

Have you heard a Norwegian (I think) duo called 'Secret Garden'? Quite similar in mood, I reckon you'd like 'em.
