Debt
In light of the current economic climate, I thought I would dust off this old chestnut from 1995. After fooling around with programming for so many years, in 1995 I decided to approach music creation totally different: sit down in one session write and record a song, playing all the instruments live one at a time on my 8-track. Never any overdubs after the single session. I did some of my fondest work that year; though I ain't much of a singer, I could get what I wanted with a creepy tone in my voice through a guitar patch. Debt was one of the first things I came up with. Anyhoo, take a listen... Debt

Cool! The voice works, but it's a little hard to understand the lyrics.

I'm impressed by your diversity. I'm just now sitting and transferring all my Oi!, Punk and Metal albums to my computer for mp3-storage. Strange coincidense I think it sounds really good. You always have these little things going on in your songs wich keep them interesting throughout. I like it that you've kept the snare loud and very punchy (the way they should be according to me) but comparing to the CD's I'm ripping they are somewhat more part of the background and not as much of the driving force in the song. That's just genre-wise though and soundwise I prefer how you mixed it. (I'd personally prefer a little bit more kick though sounwise but not genre-wise he he he). Only thing is sometimes I have a hard time hearing what you are singin', maybe the vox could be a little clearer and louder although I like the guitar distortion on them.

Sadly very reduced studio equipment as it is... ASUS G750J, 8 gb RAM, Win8, Roland Quad Capture.

Hey, James - boy this is different from your other music! it has a punk rock kind of feel to it. I agree with Legion, tho, the instruments are overpowering the vocals, so I'd at least duck them if not back them off directly. what are you processing your voice with?

Nothin' wrong with this at all Jim! Love the stepped up tempo parts. Your vox sounds fine man! Very cool indeed....

Vocals are difficult to hear. Sounds like early '90s alt-metal. I can't think of the name of the band....

Cool tune James. Pretty eclectic creativity going on. My take on the vocals is that they are placed right for this type of song, it seems like they should sit back of the song. I would like to hear more bass (liked what you did on "Microwave Nostalgia") and maybe a tad more of the kick.

The mix sounds like all mid range and lots of brasshhhhhy highs with no real bottom. I couldn't really hear even a bass line. I would bring up the bass end a bit on it and get the vox so they are more articulate. Nice guitar playing.

Yeah, it does get punky, but at first I pictured Devo. She's just a girl, the girl you want. Look at you with your mouth watering... I was a big fan of Devo, fun song though. I started to do the pogo.

Dare I mention timing issues... Actually there's nothing here that doesn't suit the loose vibe of the whole. I'd have liked a bit more meat at the bottom end too a bit of punch from the kick and a discernible bass line would be nice. There are no issues really here its just stylistic preferences and this works well as a garage sounding blast. I like the vocal treatment I'm not sure it matters that I can't make out the lyrics. Yeah, make some noise, it's a wide area you seem to be able to cover. Nice one.

Interestingly the frequency curve was fairly flat, but I found the song lacking on bottom end warmth and punch. I can hear the kick, just not feel it. Cool tune. Not what I listen to on a regular basis, but would rock to this at a party, no problem. Cheers Shad

+1 on more bottom end, but it's interesting the way it sounds now - breaking the rules a bit. It sounds punk, but I also get a STP vibe from this as well. Cool tune.

All: Thanks for the comments. As for the mix, I couldn't agree more...except I haven't mixed this since I did it on the 8-track some 13 years ago. My motto these days is "keep moving forward", and I apply that especially to my old tunes, which are just that: old. These Fresh Fish tunes were an experiment to get things done fast, solo and spontaneous: hence the off vocal notes, meter wandering on the drums, feedback and assorted other mistakes. Not to mention the completely crap equipment I was using at the time. It is a far cry from the more technical and computerized methods that I create music with today. Tom: Of course that tourist is me. Forties are the new twenties, don't anyone tell ya differently!

Interesting, a live song recorded in tracks? Interesting :-) And I enjoyed it! I mean, it's a little rough, but hey, 1 take? So it's by design. I like that smooth Tony Bennet sound you achieved on the vox, very nice crooning. What was that noise at the end that sounded like you were halking a loougie?

That's a nice one, definitely aggressive and driving. I agree that this type of music hardly needs to be (or even would benefit from) perfect timing or overly precious production. It is though terribly bright. A simple high pass filter would probably do the trick.

OK, 'Got the meters down, nothing peaking! Heehee Wow! Lots of seriously hyper-aggressive and wide-dynamics. Guitars scream and tiny *trinklet drops* of 'ordinary sounds (with rich transients)' counter them (vs. the usual expected drum counterings) Puny, Punky and very smart! Radio Vox is right loudness. The vox is tinkling clear, even at -20 dcbs (or whatever he's shrunk himself into)! This, IMO, is great living-room stuff. Its given me fresh ideas on counter movements and vox. Panning is great. 2 minutes is perfect. Thank you, James. Why the title "Debt"?

That was fun. Eclectic, a bit chaotic. Kind of reminds me of Filter.
