I sure get nervous. Every time I post something, I have a momentary bout of total paranoia, as if Britney Spears' songwriter is perched waiting to grab my idea and turn it into a detestable plastic pop hit.

Then I'm like.... I SHOULD BE SO LUCKY

No. Forget the fortune and you can keep the fame, I wouldn't want it.
My music is an expression of my soul, not my wallet.
If somebody was to steal something of mine it wouldn't affect me, it would just devalue them as an artist.

Oh, and I'd probably hunt them down and gut them as I don't believe in lawyers.

Not likely to happen to me though :P

Are you sure it wasn't George Hamilton? Didn't they threaten to tan his hid if he didn't back down? Looks like they followed through...

I knew it was something like that, thanks James.

That's the impression I've had too; that it's copywritten once it's in a fixed medium, plus it's time stamped too if it's uploaded anywhere.

This site seems to have practical information about this.

This is another one of those topics that have been heavily discussed on the forum. You may want to search for copyright to get a good cross-section. It comes down to copyrighting each tune or several as a group with the US Copyright office. Here's a link:

    http://www.copyright.gov/forms/

Whatever you do, don't fall for the services or lawyers who charge you $200 or more per song. One good thing is that if you post a song on soundclick, somewhere it will be date and time stamped providing somewhat of a reference plus the fact that several people here may comment on it which also provides a time reference. If you're really worried about it, do it the right way with the link I've provided. If you have a ton of material, copyright them as a common work for a single fee. You can copyright single songs online for $35 but the collection has a form that must be mailed in.

Absolutely. I , in fact, have a close associate who'll stamp your song 'copywrited' for a mere $34.99.

    Address to follow.

I thought a metro was a subway train line in Paris. Is that not what they mean by "click track"?

To state here for the tenth time....

You are automatically and fully protected by copyright the minute it is published (self or otherwise). You do not need to register to be protected. Registration only facilitates litigation if so required, but is not mandatory for litigation either.

In the old days we could "self publish" by mailing a copy to ourself via the mail, because in North America the mail is a legal entity and the date stamp is automatically accepted as timeline proof as long as the envelope is sealed. It is still a good idea to do this, as computer date stamps are note secure and are often contended in court.

Maybe Cakewalk could pin a note about the copyright status of works here in the song forum.

    Cheers

Taken directly from the U.S. Copyright Office site...

I’ve heard about a “poor man’s copyright.” What is it?
The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a “poor man’s copyright.” There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration.

I think it would be more a matter of digtial/eletrical timestamping as opposed to the "Poormans copyright" which of couse has flaws.....

I don’t post anything that I haven’t already had copyrighted (is there such a word?). It’s just part of the process for me – I only write a song or two a year so it’s neither time consuming nor costly (and because you can copyright a “collection” it really shouldn’t be a big deal if you have tons of material).

Am I that confident in my material? No, it’s the “wouldn’t it be just my luck…” factor.

After I posted I began to wonder if that was more about Patents than Copyright. Thanks for the correction (had not yet gone to look myself).

Digital time stamps are still easily contended in court, as the time stamp is so easy to change on any digital media (and it was timeline I was talking about during litigation discovery, not so much statute).
