Drop Outs

When I was recording Monday I had to archive tracks because things went whacky when I recorded with every track playing at once. The problem with that for me is when I do play everything back they're not quite in sync. Would it be best to bounce what I have to tracks before adding a new track? adding a new track that way? Thanks.

That shouldn't be necessary Bill, you should be able to record at least a dozen or so tracks before you hit any CPU problems. How many tracks did you have going? I'm guessing at least part of the problem is your soundcard - Sigmatels are really just stock soundchips, great for playing CD's & DVD's, but not up to scratch for recording.

Could be time to upgrade that, you can get a decent sound card for around $100, I'm sure the boys will weigh in with some recommendations.

Btw - I assume that should be '1 Gb of RAM in your signature, not 1 meg, otherwise there's your problem!

Trust me, it isn't 1 meg, it wouldn't even power up. Go to 'start-control panel-system' and you'll see what's under the hood.

James has gotta be correct here. Rather than get into replacing the current soundcard, check out the other thread going here regarding the Line6 Toneport UX2. Cheap, and alot of bang for the buck. It will take the place of your soundcard, without having to get into removing anything from inside the computer. Check it out.

Yep, that's enough RAM for now. We need to look at that Sigmatel of yours, let me do some digging and I'll see what I can find out about drivers & stuff.

James, before I got my TonePort, I was recording on my old PC with 198MB of RAM through the very same Sigma Tel chip, using the Line In to DI the wet signal from my POD2. I just about got by recording like this - it was impossible with Input Monitoring on, but recording from the POD I didn't need to.

However, I did get significantly better performance using ASIO4ALL, even though I wasn't using the Input Monitoring I checked that out and the echo was much less - still too big to record with but noticably better.

Bill, we'll give this a go if you like - ASIO4ALL 'wraps' your Sigma Tel drivers so they should work more efficiently; this might help until you get a decent soundcard.
