Recording Technique

After learning to basically record the instruments/vocalls etc. then panning, fadeouts, in GTP3, with your experience what would be the suggestion on what to learn next? Automation?

Thanks for your input.

I would be inclined to work on busses, Bill. They are an important part of the signal flow, especially when your projects get elaborate. They allow you to consolidate effects that you want to use on several tracks. They also give you more precise control, and can allow you to seperate an effect from an instrument. A classic example would be to use a reverb in a bus to shape the environment, and use the track outputs to focus the instruments in that space.
I just listened to Some Holiday Jam. It sounds really good, and would be a prime candidate for this. Just some subtle tweaking with the space could take this from hearing a very nice performance to hearing a very nice performance at a black tie concert hall with velvet seats. Hope that makes sense.
Busses are a powerful and essential part of mixing, and it would be good to learn them as early as you can.

I agree with Bob here Bill, and I can speak from experience!

That particular post switched on a light for me - although I had GT3, I was still bumbling along happy enough in GTPro2. As soon as I read Bob's post I started using GT3 and its bussing system all fell into place!
