Reverb on a MIDI track
Could anyone please tell me how I would put reverb (or chorus etc) directly onto a MIDI track or clip in Sonar 7?

Depends what you are sending the MIDI data to. If the softsynth or hardware synth you are using has buit in effects, use MIDI cc (conitinous controller) events to set the effect level.
Otherwise you will have to bounce the midi track to audio, then add effects to the resulting track.

You can apply MFX plugins on MIDI data but an effect like reverb etc is an audio F.X that you can only put on the audio that is generated by the MIDI, so you put the FX in the FX bin of the audio track that processes the MIDI data from the MIDI track

Put it on the audio track that outputs the midi data or on a bus and place a send on the audio track. That is the only way, cause midi is data, not audio yet and until it gets converted to audio, you cant proecess the audio with effects. Does that make sence to you?? Cj

Could anyone please tell me how I would put reverb (or chorus etc) directly onto a MIDI track or clip in Sonar 7? If you are using TTS-1, Hardware GM/GS Compatible synth you would use Controller number 91 for Reverb and 93 for Chorus. It should be on the Midi parameters if your instrument definitions are set up correctly. Maybe I'm over thinking this one... What synth do you want to apply reverb or Chorus to? that would enable us to help you.

Ok, I have now seen that the MIDI "track" as I called it is indeed "data" as it is in the form of a downloaded MIDI song file (Cakewalk MIDI Sequence) which is in turn being used to trigger the MS synth?
I think that the best idea is for me to copy the audio to a track and put the effects on from there. I like the idea of running through a buss CJays, I'll have a go at that a bit later.

If you're using a soft synth then you'll already have an additional audio track where you can add whatever envelopes you want, clip, track or bus.
If your MIDI track is triggering an external synth then yeah, you'll need to bounce it down to audio first.

CJ - it's the one that was there. Could you suggest a better one? Is any one you suggest likely to work any better? I think this digital studio stuff will take me a long, loooooong time to get my head round so, I'm gravitating more to where the music is. :) I think this studio idea might be called the Digital Doldrums at the moment.

I'm gravitating more to where the music is. :) I think this studio idea might be called the Digital Doldrums at the moment. That's all fine and good--The music IS important...But if you don't take the time to learn the software you might consider hiring a professional to engineer your sessions...Then you can concentrate on the music part and let someone else worry about the technical issues...Why would you pay for something that you aren't willing to take the time to learn? Yes, there is a steep learning curve if you have absolutely no background in recording of any kind (and I don't mean sitting in on a session somewhere, I mean actually having some knowledge of studio engineering)...

Well, I was sooooo pleased to find this old thread that I started.
OMG, things really have changed! I think I'm a year away from my first solo album now.
When I made this thread, I didn't even know that you put VST's in folder that you could actually make yourself!!! Like noooo, really?
I still don't have Sonar and now I'm looking at a demo of Samplitude. I think I can reasonably safely say, that I will get my preferred DAW this year.....sometime.
Anyway, thanks for putting up with me for all this time! :)
