Can you turn off multiprocessing globally in XP?

Does anybody know if there is a way to turn off multiprocessing globally in Win XP? Perhaps this is something you have to do in the BIOS. I'm able to do this on a Mac with the CHUDD tools that appear in the system preferences and let you choose the number of CPUs you want to use (I'm on a PPC). I know you can do this as an audio preference in Sonar, but I want to do this while I'm running some other audio apps. too.

Of course, the next question is "why would you want to do this," and that's not really worth getting into. I'm just hoping that someone will enlighten me so I can do this in XP.

Thanks

I believe that you have to use the uni-processor HAL, which you configure with the Windows install, but I'm not familiar with the details. The Windows installer docs will probably have this information.

Some PCs have the BIOS options for that.

Every manufacturer's BIOS is different, so you'll have to go exploring...

Yes, it's in the BIOS. Typically in Performance, and then Processor. Then the BIOS brand will determine the specific wording from there, but you'll be able to figure it out. I'm not quite sure why someone would want to disable the multi-core of the CPU, but perhaps you might look into setting the CPU's affinity regarding a certain process to make sure that's not what you want to do instead.

Thanks for the helpful replies everybody. I'll investigate the bios when I get home to the music DAW.
