best external drive for laptop

I have a 200Gb 7200 drive in my laptop. I have a 320gb 7200 drive on the way. I will copy the drive and install the 320gb drive in the laptop. The drives are SATA. I want to use the 200gb drive for SONAR projects. I would leave all plugins and samples on the 320gb C: drive.

Should I put the 200gb drive in a USB 2.0 or a SATA enclosure?

My laptop does not have eSATA but I do have a PCIe slot that I could put an eSATA interface in.

What is the best (performance over cost) solution?

I have a Dell Inspiron 9400 (2 years old) with an T7200 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo and 2Gb of Ram (factory installed). I run Win XP Pro 32-bit with SP3.

FWIW, I still have the orginal 5400 160gb drive that cam with the computer. I have that in a USB 2.0 enclosure. Shold I move all samplers to that too? None of my samples stream from disk.

I use an Acomdata 750GB "Puredrive" that has both eSATA and USB 2. My card slot is used up by a firewire express card for my MOTU, so I use USB 2. So far it has been very good. I tested the performance by recording 16 channels of 24/96 and had no problems.

If you want maximum performance, use eSATA.
If you want the best external HD money can buy, get a Seagate perpendicular-II HD (32MB cache), and put that in a good eSATA enclosure. (Off the shelf external HDs typically use slower drives)
