External hard drive

I'm not sure what forum to post this in, so apologies if it's the wrong one. I'm after some advise/ best practise for using an external hard cdrive, as my PC is getting clogged up.

Would it be best to leave Sonar 8 installed in prgramme files and move all the content/ projects / samples etc to the hard drive or better to move everything to the new drive? Looking at 500GB.

Thanks in advance

backup to the ext. drive.. (don't just "move")
I the last 6 months I lost 2 HDs,... one internal (system-drive) and an 500GB external.. didn't backup the stuff on the external..ouch!!!
I am looking for an ext. raid-mirror-system.. unfortunately the only affordable stuff I find is from the same vendor that I had so much difficulties with.. argh..
anyway, just keep in mind to have 2 copies of your projects stored on different drives..
you can't totally move the program-files to an ext. drive.. so the only option would be to store the contents/ projects/ samples on an external.. if you have room for another internal then try that instead.. get a fast one.. and use it as your "audio" drive...

Have you tried Glyph drives? I've a few and nary a problem. A lot of pros use them as well and for the GT series they have a good replacement deal.

True that you can't as such totally move the program files to an external drive, but there are options/ways around this. One is to install the programs in the first place on an external drive. The best option is a program like Acronis's True Image program that allows you to make a bootable disk image on an external drive. It also allows other backup schemes as well.

In a typical DAW, you want a "boot" HD (OS/Applications)... and a HD dedicated to streaming audio files.
If you'll be using disk-streaming sample libraries (ie: Kontakt 3), you should also consider using a 3rd HD dedicated to streaming samples.

    Regarding speed of external HDs:

eSATA - best choice for maximum performance yields full speed of the HD - ~104-107MB/Sec with a fast HD
    1394b (Firewire 800) - yields ~70+MB/Sec
    1394a (Firewire 400) - yields ~37MB/Sec
USB 2.0 - yields about the same speed as 1394a, but with higher CPU use

For backup purposes, any of the above is fine.
For absolute maximum performance, eSATA is the way to go.

    +1
ALso - the external drive such as the 70.00 250GB usb ones you can find online are great for backups (make sure and use "save as" and to check the copy audio data box). I can work form an external drive but it's not quite as fast and hangup free as an internal. I have told my wife that God forbid we ever had to leave in a hurry for fire or flood or whatever that she should grab the external drive-it's an essential cheap tool in my opinion.
