Remix of "A Bridge To Somewhere" - feedback appreciated!

I did a remix of "A Bridge To Somewhere". I think this remix blows the crap out of the last one, but my ears suck right now, so who knows? ;)

The last one was too warm and somewhat muddy (although a muddiness that didn't sound that bad actually). The big problem I noticed was that it buzzed on cheapy speakers, so I had to take a hatchet to the EQ and compressors and start over. I wish I could show you the difference.

Anyhoo, any feedback would be appreciated! Merry X-Mas!

    Oh My My My

sweet! I'm not a big fan of a real "Roomy" sounding drum kit but you've
got it going on. if it aint broke dont fix it.

Those maj7th chords are something you don't here much these days
so that adds "to me" ear candy.

    Man your movin up.

Makes me want to get out My 72 p bass and play along. But if
you could find a good upright bass player to add to that.

    Oh Man

Sounds good. Definitely an improvement man. Cutting out some of that reverb helped. Sometimes less is more... good work.

Thanks Jimmy! Unfortunately I have no idea what a maj7th is, but I'll take the compliment nonetheless!

I agree that any and all my songs could use a bass too. I don't know any bass players in my area. It would be sweet though to have it for this song and the other one!

I'm glad you like this one! More on the way this week!

Thanks! Actually, on this song, I didn't cut any of the reverb at all - that was the other song :) This song had some mud in the acoustic guitars though... so I experimenting with cutting rather boosting, or boosting rather than cutting, or a combination between the two (Which is what I decided on - it sounded most natural).

Unfortunately for this song, the original guitars were not recorded as clearly (I was still experimenting with mic positions), so more EQ work had to be done to get the sound to be clearer.

It's mighty fun though learning all this stuff! I'm having so much fun!

You never cease to amaze me with your talent. I have a little
brother like that. Hes done some crazy tunings on the guitar
and played some really nice stuff but I'm sure couldn't tell you
    what hes doing.

The eagles tune "Best of my love" uses maj7th chords.
In case you want to know. a basic bar G chord will have a
    G B D G notes 4 of em. a maj7th chord will have a G B D F#

My main instrument is guitar and hope soon to get some
stuff posted. I"d love so put some bass on this song for you
and see if i can contribute to you. If its good then its yours
    if not then thats O.K

It would be worth giving you a bass track just to see if i can
    do a good one.

I'll try and play around with when time allows and see what I
    can do

Hey Jimmy, thanks man! That would be sweet! I'm really looking forward to see what you come up with. I love collaborations - because you can tell there's different voices all trying to achieve the end result. That's why I love Rush so much. Those guys just play brilliantly together. It wouldn't be the same if one guy did all of that (nor would it really be possible I don't think). That's so cool!

great sounding tune and love the change at around 1:00. Nice descending 16th note run just after that and you're a songwriter after my own heart. The only thing I would try to do is find a hook motif and repeat is a couple of times throughout the tune. Nice work.

I got out my old p bass and played along. it was fun. I bet I havent
had it out of the case in at least two years. I was able to get closer
to the sound i thought you needed that I thought i could.

I'm rusty on the ol bass but did beter that i thought i would. this
is good for me. Hope to have you something to hear this weekend.

I just hope i can live up to a good performance time will tell.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Well, I probably do a lot of things...

    * I balance the track levels well, and compress them as needed or use volume envelops. I don't compress too much though - just leads and maybe drums. I don't have any instruments dominate the mix.

    * I also don't have instruments collide with each other, but I try and blend them just slightly. Every song is different, but my "mud" area is 150-230hz, so I attack that are with a scalpel to clear everything up. The highs need less tweaking because there is less db there... so it blends better naturally.

    * Sonic Maximizer further crisps the sound, gets rid of bad mid tones and blends it more.

    * I balance the eq so that it's even visually, and sounds balanced, with more emphasis on sound than anything else. Usually the lows are a bit louder, and then the mids and highs are a little below, but the whole thing is +/- 4 db the entire way through. The highs can peak where the bass is sometimes, like during solos.

    * I use multi-band compressors on the whole mix to further balance things, usually cutting more bass, or boosting some other freq's as needed. More balancing.

    * I then apply a 7.5 to 10db gain in an l3-ll limiter to the entire mix.

    Hope that helps!
