Can't import audio files into SP8
I received some Pro Tools tracks that were converted to PC WAV files. They play fine in Windows Media Player, but when I try to import into Sonar, the progress bar moves just fine, but no sound clip shows up in the track. Any ideas?

That shouldn't be a problem. I've imported 24 bit, and 32 bit wav files without a problem.

They imported into Adobe Soundbooth just fine, too. Why not Sonar?

Look in you manual under importing properties. I cant type the manual for you, but i can tell you where to look. The manual is your friend for these kind of things. It is what it says. Its importing properties. Its the way sonar reacts to imports. Cj

Thanks - I had gone into HELP and searched for "import properties", but nothing came up. I'll check the physical manual.

Care to post a snippet of one of those files where we can download it? Or a screenshot showing how you're importing. Are you able to import other files without any problem?

Hi Gene, What happens if you do a Save As using the Adobe app? Save the file as a 24Bit Wav file. My guess is the problem is big/little endian related. The Save As function will likely resolve the problem.

There's no help index entry for "Import Properties", and Help Search brings up a list of 20 topics, none of which are appropriate. (The first topic is "Adding Chord Symbols" followed by "Adjusting the Note Velocity" ... ) There is, however, a help topic titled "Importing Audio Files" You can find it through the Help file Index, by looking for: Importing, audio files There's also relevant info under: Importing different sampling rates

Original Poster Update: Before trying the above suggestions, I tried to import audio from a different session (at the same studio). Of the three songs we recorded that day, I was able to import tracks from one. Tracks from the other two songs behaved the same thing I described above - the progress bar below would say the program was converting, but at 100%, no clips would ultimately show up. I tried to import the problem clips into their own Sonar session AND into the session which allowed the one song. Same result - no sound clips materialized. And once again, ALL the clips in question open without a hitch in Adobe Soundbooth CS4 and Windows Media Player. So before I begin messing with Global Options and what not - why would one batch of tracks work just fine and the others not? That seems like relevant imformation ...? Thanks everyone - I know you all have other things to do during the holidays. :)

Because of your importing properties. Are all those tracks the same? Same bit rate, same sample rate, same format?? It could also be that your pc is timing out at the end of the import. Who knows?/ Can you post your pc specs and sound card specs also. And also list your importing properties. Cj

Just came across this old thread as I was having the same problem. Had some violin tracks I had a musician record for a song and Acid and FL could open the files but not Sonar. I tried a 'Save As' just saving again as 44.1 at 24bit like the originals but suddenly those worked. I read up a little on 'broadcast waves', still don't fully understand why these files would be recognized as them, but unticking that option made it work, cheers.

I love this forum! Had the same problem, too. A friend/drummer just sent me his percussion tracks recorded in PT, saved as 48/24 WAVs. For the life of me, couldn't get them to play in Sonar. Ran across this thread, and this suggestion: menu->global options->audio data->UNTICK "always import broadcast waves at their original timestamp". Worked beautifully, and now I'm back up and running with my project. Thank you!!

Broadcast Waves include their original timestamps, so if a clip started an hour into the original PT session then that's where it will be placed in the SONAR project.

Makes total sense now, had no idea what was meant by a "timestamp". Cheers.

What causes even more confusion is that if the files are placed like an hour into the Sonar timeline, when you go to "select all" to bounce something to a track, you are now going to bounce an hour's worth of not very useful silent audio. A question about this crops up at least once a month in the forums. I recommended to the bakers that they make NOT import at timestamp the default. People who don't know about Broadcast Wav won't know what's wrong or how to fix it, but people who do know about Broadcast Wav will look to see if there's a way to import at timestamp.
