Music that writes itself... by Microsoft...

http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/redmond/projects/songsmith/index.html

Wow.
Does this app seem "familiar" to anyone else?

Have we finally reached the lowest hanging fruit of consumer "get into music" software?

I'm trying to watch the video at the site but it keeps stopping and restarting and at one point it totally hung up Firefox. How Microsoftian!

On the page where you can download the trial, it says:

Note: There are a lot of people trying to download Songsmith right now, so our servers a bit hammered. If you’re having trouble getting it, please wait a little while and try downloading again later. Thanks!

I'm downloading the video now so I can see how it ends. SPOILER ALERT: Will dad use Songsmith to write a jingle for glow in the dark towels? I bet he does!

From what I've been able to see of this thing, it looks like fun and a pretty cool way to get into music. And it's only $29.99! Instruments by Garritan.

Maybe I'll buy it. (I'm feeling very fond of Microsoft these days. The UI approach of Office 2007 is so impressive that I'm tempted to check out Vista.)

Here's a link to how it works.

    EDIT:

SPOLIER ALERT 2: Well the video ends pretty much how I expected. But as often happens, the young girl gets shafted. Not even a word of thanks. Boo Microsoft!

I can't watch the video where I am at the moment.. maybe it's because you get garage band with a mac and they can't seemed to be outdone by mr jobs

they could always buy up a company like apple did with emagic.. and not even make a dent.. they did the sames with some game studios.. the people behind Halo and I heard they bought Rare off Nintendo. Games market is crazy, they play hop scotch, my friend worked for 3 companies without changing employer for 3 years or something silly like that.

    It's a 100 Mb download.

IU started to install it but it stopped and made me install a .NET update, that took a bit.

And then it made me install another short update for... I'm don't actually recall what... something else related to .NET.

Then it finally let me install Songsmith.

Of course I made an OS image before doing anything.

    First take:

This thing is EXTREMELY interesting! And not wothout serious usefulness.

Maybe I'll start a thread in the Techniques once I work with it somemore. (And yes, I mean 'work'. As in, you know, 'play'. As in, you know, do music.)

Go ahead and download it. Nothing to be afeared of (other than maybe the .NET updates.) At the very least it's very fun.

    You're welcome!

Note that it's got a 6-hour time limit. But the clock is only ticking when the program is in actual use and has the focus, so as I type this I'm off the clock. (Wouldn't it be nice if professional recording studios worked the same way?)

I watched the demo video. By the time I got to the end, I had to look at the webpage, wondering if this was a YouTube funny? But no, this is for real.

Frankly, nothing wrong with it as a toy. Keep it at that please. The guy in the video looking for inspiration for his band songs....... ah, keep looking.

Does it do anything else besides the pretty much same, lame compositions we heard? Rap? Hip-hop? Metal?
