-8° F in Carmel, NY!

Hi All-

And that's not considering the wind chill! I'm sure many of you can beat that, this being a record-breaking cold snap (in the US, at least), but after 12+ years I haven't seen this before in my neck o' the woods. I've never seen the thermometer in my car go near 0, let alone below. Apparently the water in or coming out of my well has frozen, since my newly refurbished water pump can't do a thing about raising the pressure, and (not surprisingly) I have no running water.

When I was walking to my car from the office a few hours ago, the pellets that are supposed to melt the ice were frozen and flying up into my face like hail! They couldn't melt, so they basically turned into projectiles with the wind, tiny ball bearings underfoot. Not helpful.

I hope you're all weathering this well! I know folks elsewhere are dealing with much worse, some crazy below 0 numbers.

Sitting here basically immobile with my coat & hat on, no particular point to this post except for its shared misery or whining potential-

-Susan

I hope you stay warm and comfortable.

We're at 25, the sun is shining, and our not really winterized house is waiting to thaw out as well.

We've been dripping the pipes for 2 days.

    best regards,

An old girlfriend of mine lives in that area and given what they went through last fire season, I'm sure many folks there are wishing it would be much cooler and raining right about now. It's all a bit relative really. We've had record high temperatures and no rain this month. I think one day it was over 70 at the coast, a temperature that was probably not reached in all of August, yet those of us who've lived around here during previous droughts just basically bite our tongues while the newer arrivals celebrate how much nicer this weather is to wherever it is they came from. And at a time when we could least afford it, the economic consequences to our agricultural, fishing and other industries, well, even if you didn't see the movie Chinatown, I'm sure you're aware of the importance water has in this region.

That said, I think I can see the advantages to being here right now versus being with my relatives in upstate NY...

I am sure it is due to Global Warming(tm). Lately any extreme in climate seems to be blamed on that...by people with a straight face, nonetheless. Anyone remember the story of the magic thread and the emperors new clothes?

Sorry...is Global Warming(tm) politics or religion? I think it is mostly religion so I'll mention it no more...

Anyway...Susan...hope you stay warm...I'm feelin' kinda guilty out here in Hawaii...not much, but a little... (It's 74F right now...)

We just went through it in the Chicago area. It's not terribly fun... but it's just winter gone wild for a bit. Imagine that being the standard basic winter for some of our Canadian friends.

    Hi Sue,

We had a beautiful day here today in Colorado, but last month we a couple of very cold weeks, where the low was below -20F, and it's been quite a few years since I recall it being that cold. However, my youngest son attends school in North Dakota, and temperatures below 0F are common up there.

Be careful if you're out in that kind of weather. It should warm up for you folks out east in a couple of days.

There's one thing you guys forgot that Al Gore has:

The ear of the guy who in a couple of days will be in charge of things!

Oh, too bad. Big, bad Al Gore is going to impose his view of things on us....

C'mon folks. You do know that global warming doesn't mean every year should be warmer than the previous one, don't you? It's not Al Gore's invention, most scientists believe it to be true. I just hope it isn't, because it would actually mean the end of the human culture as we know it. If the pessimistic scientists are right, there's not much to do, so it's easier to go on as if nothing isn't happening.

Suffice it to say that it is highly improbable to be in a "warming trend" and get record low temperatures and rare cold events(Such as happened last year with snow in Bahgdad, etc). The world has gone through waming and cooling cycles before and we survived just fine...unfortunately that bit of boring information doesn't generate grant money or help promote someones alarmist movie...

Susan...sorry for hijacking your thread...how's the weather today?
