Help tuning a theremin.

I think my theremin is flat. Any ideas how to better tune the dang thing?

OK I am bored. Added Camel's new Alchemy upgrade from Cameleon 5000. Cake is scanning - for eternity.

The theramin, like the thrumquattle and the spinatikis, is extremely sensitive to its environment (so much so that the thrumquattle is considered endangered in most of its former range and can now be found only in the upper registers). If you have been storing your theramin in a dry cool place, there is little reason to think that your tuning problem is due to swelling of the electromagnetic field as is so commonly seen in swamps and bogs. Most likely, given your long experience with exotic intruments, your technique can not be at fault either. I suspect that your problem may be a wardrobe failure. One factor often overlooked by modern theraministers, but evident in the classical photograph below, is the necessity for wearing a bow tie. Not simply a sign of classical taste, the bow tie actually interacts with the theramin's EM field (and sense of style) to stabilize the tuning. I suspect you may be trying to play your instrument while wearing a bolo, with predictably erratic results.

I keep reading this thread just to cheer myself up, thanks to Slart I am now considering buying a Theremin and calling in at Moss Bros on the way home to ensure musical nirvana...

BTW I notice you never see thrumquattles or spinatiki (plural) on ebay nowadays but for theremin virtuosity, you cant beat this

In a logical and evolutionary musical development the Theremin concept was found to be the perfect microtonal instrument and required no improvement. The player however after some re-development went on to become Ron Mael of Sparks

I love Sparks. I have been listening to them since the 70s. Lil Beethoven - a few years back - probably best since #1 in heaven.

Me too Spacey, I have all the albums, been a fan since I was a teenager. Hello Young Lovers superb too, I last saw them in Wolverhampton about 2 years ago. I love the way they give nothing away in their private lives, just letting their music create their image in our minds. I did hear a while back though that Ron does not have a home of his own, and resides permanently in a hotel in LA just up the road from Russell's place.
