mp3 tags any standard for pod type devices?

I'm about to post a new batch of .mp3s. I'd like to tag them wih my name and info but I see there various versions of tags... the standards are changing all the time?

Is there a best format that will preserve the basic tag info if someone drags the .mp3s over to today's pod type portable devices?

My mp3 tagger has various version choices for a tag format. Does anyone have a recommendation?

thanks,
mike

Anyone? I don't own a pod type device so I really don't know much about how they might use the tags to help with navigation and selection within the appliance.

I didn't want to use for example Tag ver 1.2 if the pods only read version 1.1 or something like that.

Does anyone have any thoughts about this?

    best regards,

If you right-click on the MP3 itself, and select Properties/Advanced tab, you should get the options to input the info you want to keep.
It's possibly not the most efficient way, but it's the surest one that's nearly universally recognized.

Which tagger are you using? I like mp3Tag for pure tag editing. The most common tags seem to be Title, Artist, Album. Then I'd say Tracknumber, Year, Genre, Comment. If you think of mp3s coming from a pop music CD then the contents of those tags should be fairly obvious. If your mp3s aren't coming from a pop music CD, then welcome to the ambiguous world of tags. There are also tags for all sorts of other data.

As for format, iTunes seems to use ID3v2.2, but the "standard" is up to v2.4. There is also debate about how to encode the text in the tags, UTF-8, UTF-16, ISO-8859 and that sort of thing, and there are ambiguities in how they are implemented. Since iTunes is very common in user-space, it's probably safe to use their method.

    Thanks to both,

Yes I'm also using mp3Tag... I've used it for a long time, and two days ago I updated to the latest version just to stay abreast of what's up.

The info about iTunes and the v2.2 is exactly the sort of stuff I'm unclear about.

I don't know anything about the UTF- stuff... which one do you think iTunes is doing?

I'm working exclusively with original content so no CD rips etc. I just want the stuff I give to people to seem up to date on their appliances.

    Thanks again,
    mike

Google turned up a page that says iTunes uses UCS-2 encoding. And then wikipedia says UCS-2 is just like UTF-16. Plus, that first link also says iTunes can be switched to ID3v2.4 UTF-8.

What a mess. I really don't know what to suggest except maybe use iTunes to tag, due to its popularity.

Well, I must admit if your confused... I'll just stand down... because you always seem to be conversant in the actual specifications and their implications. I guess this is why I thought I couldn't figure out the best choice myself. ;-)

Thanks very much for spending some time looking into it.

    best regards,
    mike
