New DAW ...

Hey all,

I'm doing a bit of research into a new DAW to run Sonar. Does anyone have suggestions about what motherboard and proccessor I should consider. Any sites I should check out? Seems like there used to be a thread here about the latest and greatest hardware for Sonar, but I don't see it anymore.

Thanks to all.

Joel

I'm thinking of building one myself, and I am looking at a Core i7 running at 2.66 GHz, which has pretty darn good bang for the buck. I haven't decided on a MB yet.

When in doubt, steal from the pros. Here are the specs for the new Scan Power DAW (sound on sound did a review this month, where they raved about it. Maybe you wouldn't make the same choices, but you'll at least know what works:

Case: Silverstone Kublai KL03 with two Sharkoon low-noise fans and ‘Silent Option’.
    PSU: 600W Zalman ZM600-HP heatpipe-cooled modular PSU.
Motherboard: Intel DX58SO ‘SmackOver’, featuring Intel X58 chip set, one Socket 1366 for Intel Core i7 processor, four 240-pin DDR3 DIMM sockets, one PCI, two PCIe x1, one PCIe x4, and two PCIe x16 slots, six SATA 3.0, 12 USB 2.0 and two Firewire ports.
Processor: Intel Core i7 920 with 2.66GHz clock speed and 8MB cache.
    CPU heatsink: Thermalright True Copper.
    System RAM: 3x1GB Corsair XMS3 DDR3.
    System drive: Seagate ST3250310NS Barracuda 250GB SATA 300, 7200rpm.
    Audio Drive: 750GB Samsung HD753LJ Spinpoint F1 SATA 300, 7200rpm.
    Graphics Card: 512MB Palit 9500GT 800MHz PCI-E 2.0 (x16), VGA/S-Video/DVI-I outputs.
    Optical Drive: Samsung SH-S223Q/BEBN LightScribe 22x DVD+/-RW.
Additional Drive: Akasa 3.5-inch AK-ICR-01EB black internal multi-memory card reader with USB 2.0 port.
OS: Windows XP Professional with SP3.

The Core i7's are the best processors out here ATM and work fine with Sonar. I mentioned Core i7 cause you mentioned "latest and greatest" but your needs may not require that much power. You'll need to assess your needs by looking at your current rig and figuring out how much more power do you need that it does not have, 2x/3x/4x/etc. You'll probably want a bit more power then you need to handle the growth of your needs. If you only need a little power then a cheap dual core may suffice, in terms of Quads the Q6600 (with cheap mobo/etc) and Core i7 920 as RichElam stated are probably the biggest bang for the buck out here.

Here's a link to a thread some of us have about Core i7's - http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.asp?m=1591110

Certainly not the motherboard I'd use/recommend for an i7 based DAW.

surely DDR3/i7 are triple-channel and need a combo of three DIMMS to work most effectively?? ie 3/6/12gb? or am i wrong?
i think the choice of mobo won't mattet too much given the sheer grunt on offer from i7...gigabyte seems a safe bet, though i see more PCs in UK using the Asus p6 board...

Love my i7. Used the cheapest mobo out there and works great (msi platinum x58). Even o/c it to 3.3 from 2.66. Its so fast am afraid it is effecting the time/space continum.

A DAW is not just the computer. I mean do you want a new computer to run Sonar or a new DAW?

How about the V Studio 700, that's an example of a DAW
