My experience is that retail packages (as this one is) come with the heatsink and fan. If you need a really definitive answer, you should contact newegg directly.

That's kind of what I was thinking but I can't specifically find the info anywhere on the NewEgg site or elsewhere.
Anyone else have input on this one?

If you read the customer reviews, you'll find several that refer the stock fan and heatsink that apparently comes with it.

Retail (i.e. "boxed") versions of processors usually come with heat-sink and fan bundled...unless its the "OEM" version which should be indicated/specified at the on-line store (OEM versions or "tray" versions of processors contain only the processor and usually comes with no heat sinks-fan...unless the on-line seller is generous enough to provide one with it ).

There is an exception to this "retail/boxed" versions, of course, when it comes to AMD's "black edition" (those with unlocked multipliers geared for overclocking)...because this "B.E." (black editions) don't come with heat-sink-fan although they are in retail package or boxed versions.

I didn't see ANY reference to the stock fan or heat sync. Where did you see it? All I've found is where someone couldn't mount a 1285g properly.

    Hi Gary,

The stock cooler won't be that quiet... (it does come with one)
    FWIW, I'd go with a Core2Quad or i7.

By the way, the newegg link to the Phenom II 940 you provided is still socket AM2+.

AMD already has their "AM3+" Phenom II versions (providing compatibility with DDR3 memory modules and armed with a memory controller speed of 2.0 GHz. Recall that Phenom II AM2+ versions released last month have a memory controller speed of 1.8 GHz and are only DDR2-compatible).

You can browse through some "AM3" Phenom II reviews here:

AMDs Phenom II "AM3" review @ Anandtech

    AMD Phenom II "AM3" @ AMDZone.com

    Phenom II "AM3" @ Tomshardware.com

...Just thought you'd like to know this in case you haven't bought the "AM2+" Phenom II yet...not so much because of the small performance gain from currently available DDR3 (those still on slow timings) but in terms of compatibility with DDR3...if and when DDR3 memory modules become the established/accepted and wide-spread standard...especially when they start selling 'em as cheap as current DDR2 memory modules...hopefully in the succeeding months as more and more memory manufacturers start to enter and saturate the PC hardware market...hopefully providing enough competition to drive the current prices down.

I already ordered the AM2+ version. Guess I'll stay with my DDR2 RAM for now. I got the CPU for $229-$15 with a NewEgg promo code that I found with a quick Google search. $15 more for me I guess. So with the new CPU and new motherboard and the new video card that I'm already using, I should have a pretty up-to-date computer. I've also ordered a Phonic Helix 18 firewire mixer. If I like it, it will replace my MOTU 24I/O and Behringer 2442 mixer. Those items will get sold and will pay for all the upgrades plus some.
