Athlon64 3500+, 3700+, 3800+ are here...
Just released today. The 3700+ has 1MB of L2 cache, comes in at 2.4GHz and fits on current socket754 motherboards with 1.6GHz Hypertransport. The 3500+ and 3800+ have 512kb of L2 cache, come in at 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz, use the brand new socket939, and add dual-channel memory controllers and 2GHz Hypertransport. Additionally, there is now an AthlonFX53 for socket939 that no longer requires registered memory. These processors start out pricey (more than the 3.4GHz P4, but less than the 3.4GHz P4 Extreme Edition), but will obviously come down as time passes and Intel responds. -S

Thanks Scott. I was actually thinking about getting something to replace my aging XP2400+. This reinforces my notion that I should wait just a bit longer. Cary

I wonder how long, and if, this will affect the price of other high and mid-range processors? I'm saving to build from scratch in August (dual opteron route, I hope) or so and would love it if prices dropped by then.

So, from what I'm reading about these, the advantage of the new socket is that it allows for non-registered DDR memory. And the buffer overrun virus protection.

The new socket provides 3 things. non-registered memory as opposed to socket940. Dual-channel as opposed to socket754. 2GHz Hypertransport as opposed to the 1.6GHz HT provided by the other two. -S

Whew! I was just about to purchase a 3400+ system. Scott, in your opinion, which is the best "bang for the buck" of the group. Is this even a fair question at this stage?

be careful when evaluating model numbers though. in the case of SONAR, the 3500 may be no better than the 3400, depending on whether sonar is memory bottlenecked. the sonartest seems to indicate that its not. it also doesnt seem cache bottlenecked either. in the case of athlon 64 cpus, mhz combined with unregistered memory seems to be the best combo. http://www.anandtech.com/cpu/showdoc.html?i=2065&p=3

There are two other factors to consider, however. The 3500+ adds 2GHz Hypertransport (as opposed to 1.6GHz). It also means you'll end up with a socket939 board... which has a much more promising upgrade path than socket754. -S

If you are willing to spend the money... the AthlonFX53 looks like the best value when compared to the 3500+, 3700+, and 3800+. If you consider the whole lineup, however... the 3200+ and 3400+ are good values (if maintaining a simple upgrade path is not so important to you). -S

Anybody know the fastest processor you can put into an old ECS K7S5A board? I've never been able to find out for sure.

Yeah they are all pretty fast. But the from what I have learned..... I upgrade my computer about every two/two and a half years. [This Oct im building a new one] And the "upgrade" Is just a new daw all together. Cus by then the "newest is greatest" and everything else is "old crap" However this time around.... Im probably gunna get a nice tyan s24466-4m Mobo and drop two 2800 MP cpu's [512 cache] on the mobo. Why? cus its "tried and true" stable. And no matter what I buy today it goes on to be obsolete in two years anyway. Plus I figure its gunna be another year/ year and a half before all the apps/hardware and windows work out all the bugs that are going to come along with the new 64 bit stuff. Plus, it will take two years for hardware that really smokes on it to be in my price range. And Ill have a two processor set up for the price that I would be paying for one. [Mp's are due to be discontinued soon and the price will fall out in 8-12 weeks ] And cus sonar supports a two cpu set up.... having two 2800's is kinda like having a "5.6 gig processor" [from what I hear] I know this all is "kinda" off topic... But just wanted to add my two cents as I see other people are looking get new DAWS too. ~Seth

this is great - my first daw which i purchased 3 months ago (athlon 3000+) is now almost as obsolete as my yamaha cassette 4 track this thread should be in the gear forum so it's not so in yer face. - downright depressing unless you happen to be on the verge of upgrading.
