Yes! Sonar runs smoother if the computer can consentrate on the what you are doing in the program separately from the audio designation. I tried doing everything in a sony vaio at first with a huge drive and it would hang up and run slooooooow. Switched to a sweetwater creation station dual core and 2 -200gig glyph hard drives separate from the computers hard drive and we are smooth sailing. Sonar 8 runs much smoother than 6 and 7 did.

As above, yes definitely. As long as your mobo supports it get SATAII, the largest cache and the fastest spinning drive you can afford (but not less than 7200rpm)

Load Cakewalk on your computer and save your files to an external hard drive. Its that simple. Probably a good idea to back-up latest versions to another drive for safety and to share with other band mates.

Set it via Options->Global->Global Audio Folder

Yes-Global options-Folders-project files. You can right click on the ellipsis button to the right of the field. Then you can browse for the folder (or hard drive) you want to designate. So if that folder is created on a separate hard drive and you assign it that way it will write it in the project files field for you. Make sure either way the " C":\Cakewalk Projects has changed to the letter of your new hard drive example= "J":Cakewalk Projects

Do you recommend internal over external via usb,or i could get a pci express 1x firewire card and plug an external in that way, are there noticeable latencies when going external?

I would go with (and I did ) the firewire option. Much faster!!!!I use the portable external hard drives. I can take to other studios for fresh ears. I also share important sessions and latest versions to yet another external for safety reasons. No latency issues here.
