facebook has "captchas" which cut down on the number of potential bots, although that doesn't keep people from making fake accounts. the thing with facebook though is that by default it is a private network. you and your friends, and possibly people in the networks that you choose (based on your settings, which are mostly locked down by default) are the only ones who can really do much of anything to you that you don't want. myspace is public by default, which makes it a more lucrative target. i highly doubt either site has much clue what their hundreds of millions of users are doing although they undoubtedly track trends and aggregate data.

while i tend to doubt your ISP's page has anything to do with it, i would try connecting without it being loaded and see what happens, make sure that norton is off, and finally, try using google's chrome browser instead. it's easier to get into than firefox - they either have flash pre-installed or it can be automatically installed.

So,... that boils down to,... it's IE and norton and not faceboo? Incompatiblle network associations on a server network level? Or,... a lack of communication between the entities involved in terms of changes in code.

i'd go with norton/IE simply based on the odds. in other words, your configuration is a lot more unique than facebook's, which is identical for every user. now, it's possible that facebook does something that norton/IE doesn't like, so who's fault it is can be up for debate. but the odds are that it's your particular configuration rather than a massive problem with facebook.

Yep, I'd have to agree with you on that. Or it's an assault upon my particular configuration-address by unknown users of the internet. Without the ability to consult facebook, I'll never know.

could be the mafia wars app.

I believe you are correct, sir. Last night I had no problems simply using Facebook. But after having Mafia Wars on for a while, erratic behavior began to occur

interesting it was mentioned here ..

I saw that story today Fog, she's only a kid really starting out in the world, and could be forgiven for being a bit naive, what a petty plonker of a boss to do that to her. Her job probably WAS boring and she was effectively only talking to her friends

Well, bloody hell...she'd be a newbie and CJay would tear her a new one when she mentioned her onboard soundcard. I think his response, if phrased properly, could send her over the edge, resulting in a total psychotic decompensation, at which point I could totally get a raise or a shiny new file cabinet!!!

Well sounds like everything worked out. My suggestion is probably stupid anyway, but I was going to ask if your boss knew your facebook name. If not, you could create a junk account just to add her and some other people so it looks legitimate, but never really use it.

My preferred method though is to just be honest with people - especially nutcases. This usually serves as a chance for them to deal with the consequences of their unstable, and often unprofessional attitudes and personalities. I love the chance to stare back at them with a sincere smile on my face and tell them that I don't trust their confidence or their brand of ethics and I choose to only interact with them while being paid to do so.

You're stuck. I resigned myself to the fact that I have to stay away from any real deep or even semi-deep personal stuff on Facebook for the same reason. Its still a public form so things you write can always come back to bite you. I would accept (because of the politics) and stay away from any topics that would make you look like anything but the well balanced individual you need to be to stay employed. Leave the venting for email and the telephone. Best of luck.

Got to ignore her! There was something in the papers about someone getting sacked as they said something about work been boring on Facebook. But I was like, you didn't have the add your boss...that is if her profile was private.

Just say you don't go on Facebook that often, and wait for a month for it to automatically ignore. She'll not know the difference!

Set up a fake account and make your life look boring. I had a boss try to live "thru" me once...it was dreadful.

You're in an amazing state.

So stay there.

I would just assume that your boss might be a bit pathetic and needs friends. if that's the case.....why not. Isn't that what Face book is all about?

My boss did the same thing to me, and I know that he uses it to see who's doing what during business hours.
I deleted all work-friends from work (after sending them emails saying why), then declined my boss' friendship explaining that I respected the work/home life boundaries.
Not only did he accept that, but he thinks that I also don't do home-stuff (like HomeStudio forums and Facebook) during office hours... hahahahaha!

Just for the record: regarding the problem I had running Mafia Wars -- the problem is Internet Explorer. I can run the same app via Mozilla, and there's no problem whatsoever. Facebook isn't a problem with either browser, but IE hangs up interminably running Wars. Mozilla: smooth, baby!
