Noise when record audio

Problem description:
recording audio from a mic. results in frequently noise like cellophane paper. Midi recording
works fine.
Could be caused by harddisk?
When I enlarge the track by double clicking, and while playing the track
move the bar, can i see the harddisk indicator lightning and hear noise.

Are there any other solutions than a new PC?

The system Computer Pentium 4 - 2.40 Ghz - 256 MB RAM - Free 20 Gb
Sound Card M-Audio FireWire Audiophile
Mixer Phonic MM 1202
Microphone Studio Projects B1
Software CakeWalk HOME sTUDIO 2004

Your system is not bad the speed is fine you are on the low side with ram 256 is the minimum for recording, especially with XP as your OS it is a ram hog to start with, upgrade to 512 at least if not a gig. Also try adjusting the latency buffers, experiment and see if you can get a bit better results

This may have nothing to do with your problm, but I had similar noise. What I found the problem to be was my external soundcard's USB (or the connection into the card itself - I can't remember which) connection had wiggled loose. I pushed it back into place, restarted my computer, then was on my way.

Not being able to hear the sound, it is hard to judge. If midi recording works fine (and I take that to mean importing audio of external midi synths) then the problems lie between the mic and computer.

If you are just talking about no problems recording midi data, you can eliminate some possible problems by recording not using the mic. Plug a synth into the card and see if you get the same problem. Then use the board.

    Hope this helps.

How are you providing the 48v phantom power to the microphone? The B1 requires 48v and your Phonic mixer only provides 12v phantom power.

Do you have another microphone you could try?

thank´s for replying. My Phonic mixer 1202 provides 48v Phantom power, I´ve also tried recording guitar that is the same problem regarding noise.

The problem could be either in the mixer, or in the line or lines connecting the mixer to the soundcard, or the audio inputs on the soundcard. My bet is on the firewire connection.

My noise problem is solved after opgrading to 1 Gb Ram. In fact also a new computer. But I´m shure as told that RAM was the solution.

    Thank you
