Punch-in and Punch-out marks don't work

I'm trying to set a punch in point and punch out point while playing back to record a section but the board isn't letting me do that.
Am I missing something here?
I'm using the VS-Studio 700C and 700R

This is what I read but it's not working:

Recording

To set punch in/out points
1. Push SHIFT+PUNCH to enable Punch Edit mode (PUNCH button flashes).

2. Do one of the following:

â—‹ To set the punch in point, push the LEFT FLAG button .

â—‹ To set the punch out point, push the RIGHT FLAG button .

The in/out point is moved to the current Now time.

The above isn't working

To set punch region to selection
Do one of the following:
● If Punch mode is enabled. Push SET.

● If Punch mode is not enabled. Push COMMAND+PUNCH.

The punch region matches the selected time range.

This isn't working either.

I just want to be able to mark in and mark out for the punch area to be recorded during playback.
This should be pretty straight forward stuff or I'm just missing it here.

The I/O button in the surface control panel doesn't toggle the Board button but the board button does toggle the control panel button.

Sorry, This is a different issue.

Looks like I'm back to the mouse for the punch in and out points.
I can use the jog wheel but who wants to do that during playback.
