how to edit EZd DND loops with midi keyboard?
basic midi help needed here.... i use ezdrummer, to do song arrangments. i drag and drop standard midi loops, and then typically edit them by hand in piano roll. so, now the songs are complete, and now i want to go back and do some real-time playing/editing to my midi drum track. now, i want to hook up my new m-audio usb keyboard, and tie into the DAW triggering EZd, so i can play along with the loops i've already lined up, adding cymbals, extra kicks, etc.... i'm new to midi, so i'm really looking for some basic midi editing guidelines, as well as how it relates to ezdrummer specifically, but midi in general. how do i get the new midi data i'm playing live, to come in on top of the loops that have already been written? or do i do this with a new midi track, and basically 'record' the new inputs that way? the idea is, to play the keyboard in real time, adding mostly cymbal work and the occasional tom flourish or additional kicks.... i'll eventually go in a hand-edit the original midi track, to eliminate any extra hits or elements i've changed my mind about.... and i can do that fine.... but adding live playing into midi, and possibly needing to quantize SOME, or NONE, i'm just clueless on it. thanks

Using your usb keyboard as the input for the midi track, if your record option is set to "sound on sound" instead of "overwrite", you just record into the tack and it will add parts without erasing. I do it all the time.

thanks rld... maybe, i'll start a new track for the manual 'hits', and that way, i can edit them seperately of the original midi track, just in case i screw up big time. LOL

i'm in the exact same boat...just got ez drummer a few weeks ago and never did anything previously with midi as i recorded all audio live. now i'd like to be able to add some crashes/kicks/fills to the loops and am pondering getting a keyboard. which m-audio keyboard did you purchase? how many keys? things to avoid/consider when getting a keyboard?

i got the keyrig 49. it's very basic.... but i used it last night to record some piano parts using the stock sounds that came with it, it actually sounded pretty good to me. i was triggering drums once i brought up ezd, but i was also triggering keyboard sounds at the same time.. i don't know how to seperate them.

that's just it.... i don't have a clue!!! LOL i mean, seriously, i couldn't get any sound out of the keys for the longest time... i just kept going into the help file, finding things i thought might get me there, hitting a dead end, and randomly changing things in the track pane... eventually, i got sound. i basically took everything at their 'defaults', which definitely did not work.

Oh come on...you're not that thick... Look at the inputs and midi channel for your midi tracks...what are they set on?

yes, i'm thick, as a brick. ;) well, i did all those obvious things... point is, i don't know what midi track something is supposed to be on... it's all greek , to me... and there seems to be a thousand possibilities, and no guidance to any one of them!

Well, unless you report back as to what your setting are, its hard to help. i was triggering drums once i brought up ezd, but i was also triggering keyboard sounds at the same time.. i don't know how to seperate them. For starters make sure your midi drum track and midi keyboard track are not sharing the same midi channel.

You gotta' keep'em separated (Verse 1) Like the latest fashion Like a spreading disease The kids are strappin' on their way to the classroom Getting weapons with the greatest of ease The gangs stake their own campus locale And if they catch you slippin' then it's all over pal If one guys colors and the others don't mix They're gonna bash it up, bash it up, bash it up, bash it up... (Chorus) Hey - man you talkin' back to me? Take him out You gotta keep 'em separated Hey - man you disrespecting me? Take him out You gotta keep 'em separated Hey they don't pay no mind If you're under 18 you won't be doing any time Hey come out and play (Verse 2) By the time you hear the siren It's already too late One goes to the morgue and the other to jail One guy's wasted and the other's a waste * It goes down the same as the thousand before No one's getting smarter No one's learning the score Your never ending spree of death and violence and hate Is gonna tie your own rope, tie your own rope, tie your own...
