I'm not a cat / dog.. jeez

although I do find it funny when you watch a show about people who feel they are above paying road tax / insurance yet own a flash car.. and they obviously lie about their identity, but now they keep a list of what tatoo's a person has..

e.g. my name is kevin... but the tatoo says Bert

Don't forget to have the CC company issue you NEW cards and numbers any time this happens. You can demand it. We've had that happen here and I get new ones overnight, 2 days max.

Hacker? If I recall correctly, we were at a shoe show in Miami? And you were buying? The private room was very nice... Thanks man, I owe you.

Good advice, jacktheexcynic!
This fraudster guy who called me had the name of my credit card company and pretty much all my personal info, so it was very easy to go along with his line of reasoning (especially since I have had the card stolen before several times) until he said, "Now, just to verify that you are indeed the cardholder, can you read me your CVC code off the back of your credit card, so that I can verify that its really you?"
That guy probably nailed all kinds of less-vigilant people that day.
Perhaps best to just hang up and call your own credit card company on a known good number to re-initiate the call yourself. That's what I did, and they said, "Well, that wasn't us calling you."

ORIGINAL: jhughs

My daughter's new ATM/Visa card arrived yesterday.

The paperwork does say "Protection from unauthorized transactions or purchases with the National City Zero Liability pledge." And she is going to get her money back but she has to fill out a separate form for each fraudulent transaction (which was only two since there wasn't much money in her account).

I liked this one though: "Your card may not be used for lottery, betting, gambling or any illegal transactions."

Okay, okay, I know that's for our protection, but I gotta wonder: What sort of criminal accepts credit cards for those "illegal transactions"?

There are courtesans in Houston that take credit cards. They advertise so openly pretty much everyone that picks up a Houston Press or other paper besides the Chronicle knows.

I have a solution for credit card fraud.

If someone gets caught committing credit card fraud, they should be skinned alive and left neked on hot asphalt near a bed of army ants in Arizona in the middle of summer.

More ways to scam....my cousin sent this to me last night. I was aware of the first 2 but not the 3rd one.

SCENE 1.
This Is a new one.
A friend went To the local gym and placed his belongings in the locker.
After the Workout and a shower, he came out, saw the locker open, and thought to Himself, 'Funny,I thought I locked the locker.

Hmm, 'He dressed and just flipped the wallet to Make sure all was in order.
Everything looked okay - all cards Were in place.
A few weeks later his credit card bill came - a Whooping bill of $14,000! He called the credit card Company and started yelling at them, saying that he did not make the Transactions.
Customer care personnel verified that there was No Mistake in the system And asked if his card had been stolen.
'No,' He said, but then took out his wallet, pulled out the credit card, and Yep - you guessed it - a switch had been made.
An Expired similar credit card from the same bank was in the wallet. The thief broke into his locker at the gym and switched Cards.
Verdict: The credit card issuer said since he did not report the card missing Earlier, he would have to pay the amount owed to Them.
How Much did he have to pay for items he did not Buy? $9,000!

Why were there no calls made to verify the amount swiped? Small amounts rarely trigger a 'warning bell' with Some credit card companies. It just so happens that all the Small amounts added up to big one!

SCENE 2.
A Man at a local restaurant paid for his meal with his credit card.
The bill for the meal came, he signed it,and the waitress Folded the receipt And passed the card along.
Usually, he Would just take it and place it in his wallet or pocket. Funny Enough, though, he actually took a look at the card and, lo and Behold, it was the expired card of another Person. He Called the waitress and she looked perplexed.
She took it Back, apologized, and hurried back to the counter under the watchful Eye of the man.
All the waitress did while walking to the Counter was wave the wrong expired card to the counter cashier, and The counter cashier immediately looked down and took out the real Card.
No exchange of words --- nothing! She took it and came Back to the man with an apology.
Verdict: Make sure the Credit cards in your wallet are yours.
Check The name on the card every time you sign for something and/or the card Is taken away for even a short period of time.
AMany people Just take back the credit card without even looking at it, 'assuming' That it has to be theirs.
FOR YOUR OWN SAKE, DEVELOP THE HABIT OF CHECKING YOUR CREDIT CARD EACH TIME IT IS RETURNED TO YOU AFTER A TRANSACTION!

SCENE 3:
Yesterday I went into a pizza restaurant to pick up an order that I had called In.
I Paid by using my Visa Check Card which, of course, is linked directly To my checking account.
The young man behind the Counter took my card, swiped it, then laid it on The counter as he Waited for the approval, which is pretty standard Procedure.
While he Waited, he picked up his cell phone and started dialing.
I Noticed the phone because it is the same model I have, but nothing Seemed out of the ordinary. Then I heard a click that sounded Like my phone sounds when I take a Picture.
He then gave me Back my card but kept the phone in his hand as if he was still Pressing buttons.
Meanwhile, I'm thinking: I wonder what he is Taking a picture of, oblivious to what was really going on.
It then dawned on me: the only Thing there was my credit card, so now I'm paying close attention to What he is doing.
He set his phone on the counter, leaving it open. About five seconds later, I heard the chime that tells you that the picture has been saved.
Now I'm standing there struggling with the fact that this boy just took a picture of my credit card.
Yes, he played it off well, because had we not had the same kind of phone, I probably would never have known what happened.
Needless to say, I immediately canceled that card as I was walking out of the pizza parlor.
All I am saying is, be aware of your surroundings at all times. Whenever you are using your credit card take caution and don't be careless.

Notice who is standing near you and what they are doing when you use your card.
Be aware of phones, because many have a camera phone these days.

Interesting....

scene 1 above....nobody should have had to pay anything...even if the card was stolen. You have 60 days by law to dispute a charge, and you are required to report a stolen card as soon as you know about it...well he discovered it on the phone with the CC company....

scene 2.... yes...always look and check your cards. Here in the USA is is common for resturants to take your card to the cash register for you. That's bad. In many places they have wireless card readers that the waiter brings to the table to do the deal. It is easy for a waiter to mix up the cards (even unintntionally) and hand you someone elses card...so always check it.

scene 3..... If you were "sure" or even suspected that the cashier was photoing your card..... I would have called the manager or owner and/or grabbed his phone from the counter, when he set it down, and checked it myself. If it had your card in it's photo memory, I'd have called 911 right then and there and had that jerk arrested.... and yes, I'd cancel the card just to be sure he didn't email the pic to someone. If you were wrong, an apology and an explanation that someone else had done that to you before and you weren't about to let it happen again......would have worked.

Just my thoughts.

I agree with you on Scene 3.....if I thought that guy was photographing my credit card, he wouldn't be going anywhere with that camera. I guess you could also check his outbox to see if he mailed the JPEG somewhere (while you hold him down with your shoe on his neck)....

Dude I so totally want to go to Argentina. I was telling my son - if I have to hang out somewhere the rest of my days and if for some reason the US aint it, Argentina is it. Wine, fly fishing, bird hunting, mountains, beautiful women... if they would just all have the courtesy to speak english it would be perfect.

My wife's Argentian ( don't forget the great Barbeque), I went there a few years back to meet the family. Take a trip into the Andes before you kick off, it'll blow your mind!

Still raining...still dreaming!
