From the article: "Most high-quality 24-bit A/D converters start out with a high-speed, 1-bit data stream to begin with."
That is just not true anymore. 1 bit converters are a generation behind. For the past 10 years or so, most high-quality converters are multi-bit (2 or more) high-samplerate delta-sigma converters.
The other thing that article glosses over is that you can't really do much DSP (stuff like fades, eq, that sort of thing) on the 1 bit signal unless you convert it to a format with more bits. And when you do that, you've just done what the 24 bit converters do anyway.
Most of what is said about 1 bit recording is hype. It takes a lot of digging to get at what's really going on.
