Korg nanoKey?

I've been looking around for an inexpensive MIDI keyboard/controller - but I didn't want to get one that lacked velocity sensitive keys.

I've been looking at M-Audio Oxygen 8 and 49 keyboards as well as E-Mu products, then I discovered the Korg nanoKey. After looking at reviews on music retailer sites, harmony central and youtube, I am more than just a little bit interested in this little unit that is smaller than a laptop keyboard.

It retails for $49.

I am not a keyboardist in the least, but this thing has some cool features like instant octave controls, pitch bending and the like.

Anyone have any thoughts on this unit? It now also comes in black.

I also am not a keyboardist. In fact, I'm not even a musician. I'm a photographer. That being said, the nanoKey is great for portability. I bought one to haul around with my laptop. However, you may want to get something with a more conventional keyboard for playability. (I have three M-Audio keyboard controllers.) Of course, that's just me. Apparently nanoKey playability was not an issue for this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c50vxqPs9Ac

A review that I saw commented on how it was hard to get consistently accurate velocity information from the nanokeys. I think I would also avoid if you've got big hands.

the thing with the nano keys.. hhmm they review all 3 things together.. and normally the keys module gets the lowest score, from a review I saw.

handy for being on a plane.. but you need something a bit more..well I do anyway.

the drum pads or mixer thing look more appealing to me TBH.. but on my mobile setup I use an ozone, which you can't get now. Only catch with that is like other things you need a power source.. so it's portable but not truly portable

i preffer the xboard for its keys, before i bought my xboard 49 i had an axiom 25 and hated the feel of the keys come to think of it every m-audio keyboard i've owned has had those toy feeling keys. i would take the xboard but thats just me, the only thing i will complain about is the lack of transport buttons but other than that i am a happy camper.

    Hi Pat,

Those nano controllers are appealing if only for their portability. But, if I may, I suggest you check out an Edirol PCR-300. It has 32 full size velocity sensitive keys with aftertouch. It also has 18 velocity sensitive pads, nine faders, nine potts/dials, pitch/bend stick, and transport controls. It is powered by USB or with a wall wart (not included). Not only that, but it integrates seemlessly with SONAR and Project 5. All that for under $200.

Check it out. I love mine.
