nice.. but did you notice something missing? anti static strap.. yes things are more static tolerant, but when your working on £40,000 worth of pcb's for a telephone exchange you don't mess about.. that's going back 20 years I guess.. most expensive computer for me so far that I worked on fixing..hmmm , probably a g4 mac.. the 2 rendering video cards for it £7000 each for a major English tv channel. machine itself I think the total bill for it was about £18,000.. £18k vs a quantel one was peanuts.. another one.. although when the new flat apple monitors came out.. £3,000 on a wide-screen one (maybe 9 years ago)... and the machine that went with it.. £7,000 or £10,000 I forget , due to the scsi drives.. they barely fitted in the machine. I'm sure Scott and Jim have done expensive builds.

Yeah stuff used to be hideously expensive - my previous monitor was a thousand POUNDS originally, I saw - picked it up for 10 euros, BTW. Wonder what he's going to use this beast for - it's high on mem, but not so hot on GFX, so probably some heavy-duty virtual stuff. Also, I would probably have waited for some Nehalem-based Xeon's instead of choosing the Opterons. That's only a few weeks from now, 29th of March - hey my birthday. Oops. Time flies.

that system was a waste of about 10k! 4x quad opterons are still beat by a core i7

that system was a waste of about 10k! That's a serious difference. How come?

assuming its for audio for under 6k i can build a system that kills it even the older 54xx Xeons would. for video rendering (Animation) it should keep up with or possibly beat a 2x quad Xeon. enter the Core i7 game over! i was a huge fan of opterons. the technology has not changed much at all for the last 5 yrs. Intl has made huge leaps and bounds past them. the PhenomII is a better product than the opteron!

16,000 bucks - and only a 1 year parts warranty?
