New DAW setup today !!!

Woo-hoo - I'm about to enter the womb of my project studio to spend the day setting up my new Q6600 DAW I had it configured for me with 3 X 500GB internal drives, dual monitor graphics card and 4Gb memory. I'm sticking to Vista 32bit for now. I also treated myself on Friday to a couple of new LG 22" TFT monitors so it should be sweet.

However this time round I'm taking my time, last time I did this I knackered the OS and had to have the whole system rebuilt. This time round I have taken Scott Garrigus' advice and bought Acronis True Image to use a try and decide test environment mode before committing. It should be straight forward enough, but I'm going to take my time and try and get it right first time. I'll keep you posted. Any you guys got any good tips for me?

Keep creating System Restore points as you go.
Learn and test how to recover a drive using Acronis before you have to use it in anger.

Enjoy all the new processing power you have.

Hey, good for you - I still have to wait 2 months. Just don't take any silly shortcuts to 'save' you some hypothecal 'time' . Biggest fly-trap ever invented, and sure to keep you up at nights.

Good advice of just doing dry runs with restores, just in case.

    nah sunday lunch..

Garry , you just take your time.. and make sure the pc boots up etc without the drives before you add them. I always double check things... things like rattling the case in case I find some loose screws

did you get the parts separate? I had to go to MK for a PSU years ago, the place there I got it from bloke didn't give a fig.. so I didn't go there after.

I always use an anti static strap, but people don't seem to these days

oh and make sure the airflow is good.

I'm getting my first DEDICATED DAW today! It's no eye-popping ultra-silent hit machine, but it's fast, powerful, and will do nothing but music.
    Exciting isn't it?

Ede, thats a great tip, I'm going to follow your advice and thats what I'm going to do next. I dont care now if I dont finish the set up today, better to be going forward always than having to unravel self inflicted problems.

    Cheers

No, no TV today Fog, just come down for a cuppa and a browse, I have decided not to go near the Sonar install stuff tonight, just letting my system get itself up to date on the various security updates etc. I have to say the LG 22" monitors look really good. I'm using Acronis True image to run all my new software in a mirrored partition before commiting (try and decide mode) it does slow things down considerably but I'm more for steady progress here than short cuts as Eden and Roflcop suggested earlier. As my current DAW is XP I will have to update some drivers particulary the Edirol driver for my audio interface, I may leave this until tomorrow.

    Cheers for now

Robby I feel for you. Been there and done that. I have thought about proposing a Lawyer Ban, but then if Lawyers are Outlawed, only Outlaws will be Lawyers. Wait. It is sort of that way now.
