Splashing out on a UX8
I don't know how this recession is affecting you guys. Its certainly hurting me, which is why forking out £317 on a Toneport UX8 aint the sensible thing to do right now, in fact its next to insanity, but what the heck! I've an ever increasing group of musician friends that come round to my photo studio for a jam on Monday evenings...Its great fun and some are putting together some good stuff. Someone mentioned cobbling together an album at some point in the future. Everything from bagpipes to tin whistles. I'm sure it'll be interesting if nothing else. I was just wondering if the recession was affecting anyone else in silly ways

Its a good thing that I have friends I can record...It might be a bit wasted with my musical limitations.

alan - looks like you have SHS6, right? you'll have to use that to record with it, not MC. MC is limited to 2 simultaneoud inputs.

That was the over all plan Reece. HS6 then a multi input machine capable of recording several musicians in one take. I enjoy recording my own attempts and I mainly use MC for that however there's quite a different buzz on things when you get real musicians onto the tracks. Am really enjoying myself..wish I'd done this 20 years ago, although this equipment wouldn't have been around then.

Having a night when musicians stop by and play, and then being able to record them with the high quality tools you have at hand....what recession? Sounds like the best of all possible worlds to me. Positive attitude. Later Albert

You have the internet, a decent recording set up and Im sure a good enough circle of friends that could be enticed with a little imagination Reece. Maybe I exagerrated a little, not all the people who come are true friends...There are a few hangers on, but its still good fun. Its a nice way to meet people with similar interests, both experts and novices...Not too many experts to tell the truth.

oh - I know and I do collab over the internet some - but that's not what I was envious of! getting together in the same room with others creating music is a LOT different than doing it over the internet!

Not at all Reece..I'm sure you under-estimate your capabilities. I jumped into this thing with both feet...and I'm very glad I did...I'm learning stuff all the time. Much faster than when I was struggling along by myself. For me:... Music, enthusiasm and fellowship is first. all the technical stuff follows on from there.

Reese some of them may be better musicians, but you really do know your DAW stuff. Plus we can't learn from those who know less than us! It is far better to learn for masters!

..."not all the people who come are true friends...There are a few hangers on"... As long as they all bring their own beer, even hangers-on can add to the atmosphere. There was a time, a few years back, when my house always had a small group of musicians dropping by, some times every night, or at least every other night. It was great, I was constantly learning, but we had absolutely no recording equipment. Now, I have a studio big enough for a full band and the isolation booth for the vocalists, a control room with multi-channel recording capability, and not a soul drops by. Funny how it works. Later Albert

LOL! yep - you guys may be right - maybe I'll eventually get up the kahunas to ask them over some time! I doubt they'll bring the beer, tho - we're all Baptists! If only one of us were Baptist then they'd drink all my beer!!! Two or more Baptists in the room and the beer will stay in the fridge!!!
