LATENCY - WHAT IN SAM HILL AM I MISSING????

I have used Sonar in the past and Im ready to take things to the next level. Ive been recording music for years. I do R&B,Jazz,Soul,Hip-hop and Club Music. I've put out a couple of CDs and im coming back from a 3 year hiatus from the music biz. I decided to build a computer.

Ok ppl my computer specs can be seen in my signature, but i cant seem to figure out why I still have a latency issue when I play back tracks with audio and midi. Is my sound card? If so any recommendations I was looking at the edirol FA-66 Audio Interface.

I would really like to know what I need to do to Optimize the performance of Sonar 8PE on the my custom build system.
Can Someone provide some tips for Vista x64?

Just for giggles heres the rest of my entire studio set up (feedback is ALWAYS welcome,TEACH ME!):

It would help to have a bit more information to guide you with.

What are your settings on your sound card set at - buffer size, sample rate?
What driver mode are you using - ASIO or WMD?

(My teminalogy is terrible and Im not at my studio, on options>Audio> has 44.1k sampling [sometimes i use 48k] the drop down is at 2 and the slider is set as low as it will go 5ms. im using WDM.

I can record straight MIDI just fine. But then Ill add some vocals and when I try to add some additional MIDI notes or tracks I get the slight delay.

Ok I did some research on an audio interface an I keep coming back to this one:
    Emu 1616M PCI Digital Audio
    System (Pci-breakout box) - $399.95

Only thing is I prefer it was PCIe and im not sure of how good the drivers are for vista 64.

Anyone have any thoughts about this card and breakout box or another suggestion?

FWIW, You won't currently find any PCIe audio interface worth having in the sub $800 range.

With the system specs.... you have a banging system... the weak link is the soundblaster card. Emu makes some decent PCI cards.... or go USB or preferably Firewire, it's an external card/interface.

Do your homework before you buy something.

If you've been out of recording for a few years..... a lot has changed....for the better.

Where's CJ when you need him? !!!

jwalk, I would start with your Audio Interface - your system is going to be fine, but you really need a Firewire or USB interface with manufacturer designed ASIO or WDM drivers to really get your latency down. I have the excellent Cakewalk badged version of the Edirol FA-66. I am right in the middle now of staging my new Q6600 quadcore DAW with Sonar 8 PE and Vista 64 bit, and with minimal tweaking (ie one minute) I am already getting down to a reported 4ms latency - Now thats without even trying. So it's certainly an interface I could recommend.

With the rest of your DAW spec, I would venture that the right audio interface will get you there
