Baffled...
This morning... I decided to record a couple of tracks on a new tune I'm working on.... So I crank up the Dell...open the project and load it up. I had started to build my drum track yesterday...so I figured I'd pick up where I left off. So I hit play...and nothing moves... the timeline just sets there. I close & reopen the project...same thing.... so I close and open a different project...same thing. I reboot and after the boot, I restart my interface.... well the timeline moves.... but no sound... I close & open again I get a NO MIDI Devices installed..... I tried everything I knew to get operational..... here I am setting on a brand new song begging to be tracked and the DAW is acting spoiled... So I whipped out the old system point restore..... ah yes.... there was a restore yesterday morning at about 11 am...... select it and let it run..... 5 minutes later.... reboot, reset the interface, and lets try this thing again.... Load the project.... no warnings this time.... hit play..... SOUND!!! proceed to the recording of the tracks..... cause...unknown...... problem solved.

This has happened a couple times to me. I just wrote it off as another one of the mysteries of Windows. But I never had to do a sysres. I usually waited it out. Oh! One time I discovered that the disk was defragging, which could have been the problem that time.

that would suck. I know it happens, tho. I got home today, fired up the computer, sent off a couple of emails, left to run an errand, come back and the computer was off (I left it on). push the button...nothing. push it again. push it over and over and over in frustration. nada. my power supply fried. I had to run to Fry's and get a new one. just now got back and got it up and running again.

A wise man, well before his time. He must have known somehow, in his/her great cosmic depth of knowledge, that someday a man named BillGates would appear to destroy all that is true and pure and banish it from site deep in the bowels of a vista/window command code. Later Albert

It worked....because I was able to run all day and track...almost completely a new song.... Now I just have to go back and tweek the tracks..... and figure out if I need more tracks....or if it's OK..... Windows is like that...and for all the long time Window users..... I started with DOS and somehow survived all the incarnations of windows from 3.1 to 95 (gee that was a fun OS) to ME to XP and now Vista.

Linus (Torvalds) the inventor of Linux ...... Sorry.... But I'm a strong advocate for Linux, but Cakewalk doesn't run on Linux. - TAP -

guitarhacker....I'm more of an IT guy than I am a music-maker. My advice would be to run a good backup, a virus scan, and then scandisk. When something like that happens it's usually a precursor to some future nastiness....hope I'm wrong.

It fixed itself because with Cakewalk Music Creator 4 you can "Create Music Fast"..... You don't think they were lying when they made that slogan do ya?

Linux Sminux, i am a musician, and recording nut, not a programmer, i leave that hacker stuff to others. My system is rock solid and has been for a long time. When i rebuild it will be with either XP Pro or Vista tweeked for music.

with Cakewalk Music Creator 4 you can "Create Music Fast" * *Once you get it up and running. The PR people don't like to talk about the initiation period.
