Don't Laugh...Aardvark Q-10 question

Hello all,

I've been using an Aardvark Q-10 for the last 7 years and love it. I recently bought a second unit on Ebay so I could have more inputs. The short version is both units function great by themselves but I can't get them to work together. The slave unit records horribly...full of clicks, pops and some kind of digital sounding distortion. I am running Sonar 5 Producer with a Dell XPS 400 using windows XP media edition. I am using Aardvark 7.13 drivers for the cards. Any clues?

Thanks everyone!

Butch

Dumb question, but have you tried both of them independently to verify that the one you just purchased is working properly?

I don't know anything about those units, but that sounds like a clocking problem. Make sure one is set as the master clock, and the other one is set to get wordclock from the master.

    Hi Butch-

You have probably already seen this, but a user in this post is explaining the differences between Aardvark drivers, etc.: Aardvark Q-10

I think you're right. I used to have a Q10 and LX6 hooked together years ago. I had to use an SPDIF cable to link them together as the LX6 had no BNC connector.

To the OP, if you still have the little manual for your original Q10 it explains how to sync the units together. I think I had the spdif cable running out from the slave and in to the master and select which unit was the master in the Q10's software. Good luck.

Windows 7 Pro 64bit, Core i7 920, Asus p6td deluxe, Sonar X1c PE, Motu 2408 mk3, Apogee Mini DAC, 3x UAD-1, Digimax FS, Motu Microlite, MCU, Tranzport, Nocturn. And more...

    Hi, Butch,

I assume you are connecting your Q10's via the wordclock jacks on each unit. The first unit must be set to "INT" in it's control panel and the slave unit must be set to "WC" in it's control panel.

If you have your units set up properly already, per above, check in your ASIO configuration in the Aark Control Panel that the correct card is selected as the master.

If this doesn't get you up and running, you might want to try the older 7.04 driver in both ASIO and the proprietary Aardvark WDM modes. I had better luck with latency and stability with the older driver than I have had with the 7.13 driver, but 7.13 does work OK usually.

I'm betting it's just a timing issue as has been mentioned. Set your two cards up correctly and you ought to be on your way. Good luck.

    Best regards,
    Bill

    Thanks everyone!

I did try the cards by themselves and they both work fine. I have used the s/pdif and the wc to sync with the same results. Maybe I can try the 7.04 driver.

    Thanks again

    Hi, Butch,

What is showing up in your Options/Audio/Drives in Sonar? Do you see all of the ins/outs of both cards?

Also, do you have both cards set to the same bit depth/sampling speed?

    Best regards,
    Bill

    Thanks again

Also, The Media version of XP is known notoriously for having problems with pro audio apps and hardware. Pro-Tools and many others dont support this version.

That wouldn't help, the Q10's interface via a PCI card, not firewire. That patch really only addresses firewire speeds.

Hey OP: have you checked for any IRQ conflicts in device manager?

I used to have a DP2496 ...nice audio interface. Too bad the company went belly up.

I have everything set the same for both cards except one is master and one set to WC or S/pdif. All the inputs and outputs show up in Sonar. I've heard bad things about the media version of XP too. I'll check for IRQ conflicts.

    Thanks again everyone!
