What Rewire devices? Does MC 4 support Rewire?
Did you reboot the computer after installing your Rewire applications?
I don't have any experience with Rewire, but there is a lot of info in the help file (SONAR Home Studio 6 help; MC Pro 24 didn't have any info at all about Rewire). First, can you use Rewire with MC 4?

I'm not sure MC4 allows rewire. SHS does, but probably not MC. what are SI strings? are you talking about Studio Instruments by cakewalk? that doesn't come with MC - if you bought it separately - you don't need to try rewire it - you use it as a VSTi. INSERT>SOFTSYNTH>

Just read up a little bit; according the the MC 4 pages, Rewire is supported. Insert it like any soft synth, says the SONAR help file.
How fast is your computer? How much RAM? Which operating system? What sound card?
You don't 'record' Studio Instruments. It's a soft synth. You have to have a MIDI track with data in it and output that MIDI track to the Studio Instruments soft synth.
Describe your process of using MC with SI, please.

And how/what are you trying to play in Studio Instruments? Do you have a MIDI track with data in it and it's output sent to Studio Instruments? Or are you trying to play a MIDI keyboard through Studio Instruments in real-time?
Some folks have had problems getting MC to work with Vista 64, but others have had no problems. And so few of us long-timers have Vista 64, that we don't know how to set it up correctly.
You can try changing the driver mode to MME.

Okay. When you click the + on the left side of the synth rack, you should get a menu of available soft synths. Also when you click 'Insert' at the top of the MC 4 screen. Is Studio Instruments on that list?

And how are you trying to use them? You need a MIDI track with notes in it, output to the soft synth for it to play anything. I think. I don't have SI, but it's very similar to other soft synths.
I understand it can be 'played', but the nuances of it's use are unknown to me.
Open a MIDI track. Select the Piano Roll View or Staff View. Enter some notes in it using your mouse. It doesn't matter what notes, we're just trying to get sound right now.
Then go to that MIDI track pane and set the channel to channel 1. Change the output to Studio Instruments. I think you have to choose which instrument you want to play in SI, but I don't know how to do that. Click Play.

The midi read/write does not mean that cakewalk will automatically write midi lines for you. You have to enter the data in some format, either by the note, as you did in the piano view, you can also write the notes in the staff view, or enter notes with a midi keyboard.
I think that is what you are asking.

Yeah, I'm not real strong on the midi stuff myself, but I figured it was late on a weekend, and you may not get many responses at this time, so I threw my hat in the ring.

Yeah, I had to go to bed. Worked Sunday.
Swizelstix, I don't think you have to click Read or Write for it to play. It's on Read when you open it, so it can read from the MIDI track. Write is usually if you change the settings and want to save them for that track, but in most cases, you won't click either of those buttons.
    Anybody else got SI (RB)?

    Swizzle....

The Realtec card (seems lots of computers are coming home from the factory with them) is not a good card to use. Yeah... it's possible to get sound from them by switching up the driver modes.... but in the end they don't give a joyous experience.

Since you have invested some money into MC and SI...I would recommend looking into a decent recording interface to reduce (eliminate) the soundcard caused problems.
between $100 to $300 will get you in the game.
