Daylight saving

Just noticed the timestamp on posts was wrong (had mine set to UK time) - +5 from current server time...

It appears the US have already switched to daylight saving, whilst the clocks go forward next week in the UK.

I've had to adjust the timestamp to +4, and next week will have to change it back to +5!!

Ok, this is no big deal, but wouldn't it make sense for all countries that adopt a daylight saving policy to all change clocks on the same day?

    Don't get me started.

I say abolish the stupid thing once and for all. Split the different, everybody moves back a half hour (or whatever direction evens it out), and be done with it forever. DLS is, IMO, one of the dumbest ideas of all time. I have heard all the reasons for it, and none of it makes sense to me.

    Cheers

True but here in the states we have states that have their own Daylight Savings Time or none at all. Personally I hate it. It save neither daylight nor time.

    Depends where you live VJ.

I mean as a kid I used to go west coast of Ireland , sunset was hhmm 50 minutes later than in London, so I understand why they do it. Some places are more effected by it than others.. esp. places in Northern Europe. Helps them maximise the sunlight.

The subtle changes in the seasons does add up. Even in the UK, say Scotland.. kids going to school in the winters.. it'd be even darker when they went / came home from school.

I did find it funny when Oz changed their times and windows had to be updated as well.

There are some places in the U.S. where DLST is not observed, such as Arizona. And surprise, they didn't fall off the face of the earth due to being out of sync with the planet's rotation!

It is confusing, though, since half the year I'm in the same timezone as Phoenix and half the year I'm an hour ahead. It's weird when someplace is behind you in time and yet physically to your east.

And there are individual counties in the U.S. that don't observe DLST! Imagine how confusing that is for the locals - you neighbor across the street could be in a different time zone.

Personally, I think DLST should be abolished. In fact I would not be opposed to going to a single worldwide clock. Let's just all use GMT and do away with the confusion altogether.

I have a clock on my desk and another on the bookshelf in my bedroom.... which are right 6 months of the year.... I never change them.... I have about about 12 or so other closcks on th ehouse... not counting the cars..... they do need to be changed.... thermostat and kitchen stuff... they have to be right......

I like the "fall back" stuff OK...extra hour of sleep... the "spring ahead" bites...

I think its lame as well. But I don't worry about it, as the only clocks I use automatically switch (Cable box, computers, iPhone). I don't wear watches cuz I ALWAYS lose them. My mom used to give me a watch for Christmas every year, and I always managed to lose it by my birthday (Feb. 24). Finally I told her "don't buy me a watch next year, cuz I'm gonna lose it." What did I get for Christmas that year? 4 Simpson's watches from McDonald's happy meals and a "Jackson 5 Victory Tour" watch from 1984ish...and this was in 1997. She thought it was SOOOO funny...so I went along with the joke. I wore them everywhere and everybody loved hearing Homer, Bart, and the King of Pop do their thing...I would play them over and over and over at the dinner table just to annoy her...I think the average lifespan of those watches was like 45 days or so...once they all died, she never bought me a watch again...

Jinga, I work with someone part of the time who used to works at a major electronics company.. they do a lot of watches etc he just retired , but they want him back as a consultant as he's good at his job.

they factor in a lifespan for watches / clocks..so say you pay $60 for a watch.. they will say $30 for a new strap if the old one breaks.. most people will say sod it , I'll just get a new watch.

the funny thing we these things is the first battery lasts ages, and the later ones just are rubbish.

No, we'd start work at the same time, it would just be called 12:00 AM. Absolute times would eventually lose their traditional connotations.

Why does lunch have to be at 12:00 PM? Anyone who does work a night shift will say they take "lunch" at, say, 4:00 AM and it's perfectly natural. We'd soon associate 20:00 with lunchtime and think nothing of it.

All those telemarketers and phone support folks in India have created an entire subculture of people who work the night shift so as to be in sync with North America and Europe. Traditional times of day must mean nothing to them. I imagine local businesses have adjusted accordingly, too, keeping late hours to accommodate the night workers.
