Big band :-) Ala Glenn Miller, pretty cool. And the Manhatten Transfer BGV were a nice touch. I could see the horn players swinging their trumpets back and fourth and up and down.

WOW that is one cool piece. remarkable production. great
vocals. i cant think of one crit on the mix at all on the first
listen i was digging it too much for that.

the "only" thing i hear is the guitar licks with the horns is a touch
out of sinc. not allways just sometmes one spot is at 2:36 the guitar
sounds like its playing ahead of the horns.

it may be that horns by nature have a slow attack while a guitar
doesnt so it only appears to sound this way. it may not sound
that way to someone else too.

so thats just a thought and it may be only me.

anyway super great job on this

Scott - You know I'm a fan of your music man!! Are you doing everything on this? Has a Brian Setzer vibe to this. The horns sound real. Just putting The composition is a work of art in itself! Excellent all around! You do need a new zoot suit tho... I can do the finger-snaps on your next one..

    boogielicious,

I love this kind of music. You've done a wonderful arrangement with this piece and the vocal is top-notch. Lot's of great stuff going on in the piece.

My first crit would be that the bass, which you say is what inspired the song could be hotter in my opinion.

Second, there are several places where the horns/guitar/etc. are not gelling as a group. Not that it's horrible, just that this song could rock so much harder if you'd tighten up those spots. There are places where the horns are holding the last note of a phrase just a little bit too long, which makes them feel less tight than they might be.

Also, for my money (and I'm a guitarist, so take it with a grain of salt), the guitar solo sections could be louder in the mix. I love that sort of Brian Setzer sound you've got going and I'd like to hear it right up front.

Lastly, for me, the finger-popping bit at the end of the song isn't working very well. I didn't sit and count it out but it feels out of time. And the way the song sort of just fades away at the end is not as exciting as the rest of the song is, in my opinion.

Otherwise, you've got an amazing song going on here. Love it. You really seem to know how to write/arrange for this style of music. Congratulations.

    Best regards,
    Bill

Yeah I heard that too, but I wrote it off as "color". Sometimes if it's "too tight" (perish the thought!), it can venture in to the realm of the mechanical? I thought the blemishes (to my ear) added to the overall product. YMMV and I'm sure others agree with you Bill, you make some good points.

Thanks Everyone. I appreciate the feedback. I had a lot of fun doing this song, but it took a long time. The horns are Garritan Jazz & Big Band as it the bass. I played with the bass volume a lot and on some speakers is was too much and others too little.

I will look into tightening up some parts. I tweaked it a bit before posting, but when things line up too tight, I lost the definition of the instruments. GPO can sound like a synth if it's too tight as well. Maybe some panning would help there.

Mixing is definitely the hardest part of recording IMHO.

    Thanks again,

Very nice... I do love to swing... The horns are great, although maybe a little loud in places... I'd like to hear the bass volume brought up to the same level as in the middle section...
    Well done...

    Hi, robby,

Well I certainly wouldn't argue your points here. From what I've heard of your music, you're way better at it and know more about recording/production than I'll ever be or know.

My point about tightening up those little spots where the horns seem to be less together than they could be was not to have them be made to be "perfect", but to make them smokin' hot and "together" like you'd hear from a really, really good live horn section.

As you know, the really good sections (horn, or otherwise) in the great live bands hit the beginnings and ends of phrases exactly together and at exactly the "right" time to make the overall groove of the song smack the listener in the head. It's subtle, but it's what separates the good from the great, band wise, in my view.

In any case, I'd never want to hear "Easy Monrin'" become mechanically perfect, since mechanical is the one thing that could kill this track instantly. I'm totally in favor of "imperfect", but I must admit that I love "killing tight", if that makes any sense.

    Best regards,
    Bill
