How Many Tracks Can You Comfortably Record Simultaneously?

Hi,

Even though I've been using sonar on my laptop for recording for a number of years now, I still don't know what to expect from computer performance. I know there are many variables, but I was hoping that you could give me some clues as to what to expect from our hardware. I also know that processor, ram, bit depth, sample rate are all important factors.

My laptop has 1.73GHz Intel Processor
Ram 1.5gb
OS SP 1 Vista 32bit
Record in 16bit
Sample Rate 44.1

Can record two chammels simulatneously (Edirol UA-25) without dropout. However usually drops out in 24bit.

Could I squeeze more out of my laptop if I changed my audio input device?

the edirol should work fine for 2 simultaneous 24 bit inputs. your limitation is your processor and RAM. you're running 1.5G with Vista (which is a resource hog) and your processor is actually quite slow compared to modern systems. which version of sonar do you have? if you have Sonar 6 or above you can take advantage of multiple processors, so a quad core system would easily record 2 simultaneous tracks (and more - but the edirol will only handle 2).

My Q6600 is happy with 24 bit 44.1KHz whilst recording from all 8 of my UA-101s analogue inputs via USB.

I don't think you'll improve on the UA-25 performance wise. I agree with The Beagle and think you should look at investing in a more powerful laptop with a little more RAM too.

On the other hand you might find a useful performance improvement by ditching Vista and installing any available flavour of XP you can get your hands on.

    Hi,

    Thank you for the replies

I must confess that changing my current system is not my real intention for this thread, nor is it to ask what I should buy next.

I just want to know what hardware you have and what you can comfortably record ? As this may influence my next computer purchase !

Sorry if my previous question was ambigious.

    Hello Again,

Beagle, It says your system is 2.4Ghz, 4gb Ram DDR (2 or 3)

How many tracks can you comfortably record simutanaeously and at what bit and sample rate.

    Cheers

I have a Delta 44 soundcard which has 4 available inputs. I can easily record all 4 inputs simultaneously at 24bit/44.1kHz. I am certain that my system would be able to handle more simultaneous inputs if I had a soundcard with more inputs available.

    - and my DDR = DDR2, but technically WinXP only sees about 3.25G.

And technically your original question was "Could I squeeze more out of my laptop if I changed my audio input device?"

My answer was "NO, becase the Edirol is not the problem - your computer specs are the problem"

Well if I wanted to record more than two tracks at the same time then the Edirol would be the problem.
Maybe if I used the same delta audio input device that you have and recorded at 16bit I could also get 4 tracks simultaneously. I would of course use a USB stick to boost my ram up to 4gb.

The processor is actually the biggest problem tho, yes, RAM will help but not as much as a faster processor. if you increase your RAM to 4G you still might not be able to record 2 simultaneous tracks.

do you need low latency during recording? have you tried increasing your latency buffers?

    64 tracks 48k on a laptop!
using RME Madiface yes it can be done and with less than you think

you should be able to do bare minimum 12-16 tracks record.
now if its record/playback thats another story.

Don't confuse Random Access Memory (RAM) with long term storage devices such as hard disks and USB sticks.

    Hey Edentowers,

In Vista a usb stick can be configured into what they call a readyboost. With usb 2.0 the stick is used as a paging file or something like that which gives the effect of having increased ram. Just a little gimmick, but its' actually quite endeering as a feature.

    Hey Beagle,

Im more concerned about the thread title being the original question, sorry if I've confused things by adding in extra questions.

My own computer performance was just really a reference as to what I wanted to know about other peoples systems.

I doesn't really take a genius to work out bigger processor more tracks or more Ram more tracks etc.

I just want to know how these hardware firgures relate (from users actual experiences) in terms of ...........see thread title !

    Thanks

    Now that is interesting.

When I get the time (in a few weeks) I'll definitely look into that, but please tell me more in the meantime.
