Hello from England, can you help me,i have just upgraded my os [xp] from service pack 1 to service pack 3 as a result my system now takes 7 mins to boot where as before it took less than a min, is there a list of services or applications running in xp that can be turned off,my system is not on the net and never has been so i want to get rid of everything sonar doesnt need,when i first got set up [sonar 4] i had a clever friend who got rid of everything not needed but since i upgraded to sp3 its all come back and i dont have a clue how to customise the os can you help

    well you should post your spec's... my first thing that comes to mind is.. sp3... well I normally say run at least 1.5 gb of ram.. if ur running 512 , it's no where near enough

    also when was the last time you defragg'd the drive(s)

    Also check the amount of free drive space (on your boot/OS drive) and empty your trashcan etc.

    Maybe also check in device manager to see if your drive mode is still DMA, or has been switched back to PIO mode - maybe SP3 flagged your drive as having too many errors - this does happen.

    It's not the latest system, I take it. RAM could also be a problem, indeed.

    I thought you could not go from 1 to 3 without also doing 2?

    Upgrading a laptop running xp from service pack one ,two, to service pack 3,is a big nightmare.
    You might as well buy a new hard drive and start new ,and use your other hard drive for back-up.
    When you load the winxp on the new drive,make sure it already includes service pack 3.
