buying a comp for sonar 7

Hi,
Ive been running Sonar 7 Studio with a Pentium4 2Gz and it just dies when I use many plugins. Im buying a new computer and would like your opinions as to whether this would be ok:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 2.3GHz cpu
Biostar GF7100P Motherboard
3GB PC6400 Memory
Western Digital 500GB Hard Drive
Windows XP Professional SP3 OEM

Thanks very much for any help you can give!

    Hi Doc,

It looks like your post has been laying around for a while so I feel compelled to respond.

One thing for sure, that system will smoke your old P4. I don't know much about Biostar motherboards. It seems like most people go with Asus or Gigabyte these days. If you are going to be using a firewire interface, you might want to check into who makes the FW controller on that particular Biostar. If it uses a TI chipset, it may save you from having to purchase a PCI firewire card later.

Regarding Western Digital drives, the WD SE16 750GB is quiet and a good performer. You might consider using the current hard drive as the Windows system drive, and then purchase another to use for your audio files, projects, and samples.

The 3gb of RAM should do nicely with XP SP3.

In general, if you're a hobbyist, you don't need to go hard-core, and a store bought computer can be just fine. If you're not a pro, don't get too excited about the forum members who will always tell you that you MUST purchase from a DAW builder.

    Just my $.02 worth.
