Possible Solution For DR-008 And SONAR X64.
Hi all: I had a problem in which the Cakewalk Plug In Manager would hang when it tried to scan the DR-008 for use in SONAR 8.3.1 X64 version. I mistakenly thought the solution was to uncheck the "share drivers with other programs" option. After restoring windows from a backup that was made without the DR-008 working in SONAR X64, I tried that and discovered it wasn't really the solution, as the plug in manager still hanged when scanning the DR-008 .dll. I think I found what is a reliable solution, and I hope this works for others who ran into the problem of the plug in manager hanging when trying to scan the DR-008. Possible solution: Run the 32bit version of SONAR, run a VST scan so that the DR 008 is working in SONAR. Two things it seems need to be done is to install the DR-008 VST version in only one directory, and load the VST version in a project in SONAR 32Bit. Now. with the SONAR x64 version, make sure the Cakewalk Plug In manager X64 only see's the DR-008.dll that is in the directory that the 32bit version of the plug in manager successfully scanned. Now when a VST scan is done with the Cakewalk Plug In Manager X64, it should successfully scan the DR-008. The only probem with the DR-008 using a SONAR X64 version is that the kit you have loaded and saved with a project will have to be manually loaded each time the project is opened. As you may know, when using the 32bit version of SONAR, if a kit is saved when loaded into the DR-008, the kit will load automatically when that project is opened. I'm just happy to have the DR-008 working again in SONAR x64.

I have used the DR008 for a long long time - and imho, it still is a great tool, though lacking in some updated features some of the other more modern modules have. One reason it's hard to give it up is that it's so handy, so easy to use, to easy to try out different sounds, so easy to tweak quickly, etc. Some newer modules, like Battery3 are great, and others as well - but the DR008 is so quick to setup whereas others are a bit more cumbersome to change on the fly. BUT, slowly I've started to move away from DR008. It's not supported anymore as I'm sure you know, therefor as technology marches forward, it will be left behind. So now I use a variety.... BFD2, Battery3, BPM (actually easy to use as a drum module, btw), MASCHINE, PhatBeatz, and so others. By experimenting with many, I'm finding it looses things up musically as well. It's great you found a way to keep using DR008 should one want to, though.

Hiya ba_midi: Yes, I know as technology progresses. I will eventually have to move on from the DR-008, but I still have use for it right now. I'll go with something like Battery 3 or a hardware elcectronic Drum Machine, some time in the future, I have some old unfinished projects that uses the DR-008, so I want it around for a while, yet. I'm glad I found a solution to the problem I was having, but I will move on eventually. And yes, I know it's no longer being developed, but I don't like the other stuff FXPansion has, especially GURU.

This method worked for me and I appreciate this unorthodox approach! I also use DR-008 on a lot of old as well as fairly recent projects as I migrate into something new- i wish Cakewalk would make a drum machine a lot like Dr-008 with better graphics and new features. It would be key for producers that do other than standard rock drums- Lance

Also Maschine. Motu's BPM. There are others. I used to use the DR008 a lot too until I realized it was actually holding me back both sound-wise and feature wise.
