Laptop Upgrades

I have a Dell Inspiron 6000, 504MB of RAM and 1.3 GHz. Can I get these updated, enhanced, etc? I have been a PC owner my whole life, and most of the problems Ive experienced with them were related to internet. But all my musical producer peers are so high on Macs, I wonder if I should spend the money to upgrade my Laptop PC or keep saving up and get a mac.

    keep this for internet and buy a new one , not internet on it or make adual boot : vista for the web and xp for audio , don't go mac , connections are too limited (talkin about usb ...)
    for the price of a mac , go with hp proffessional line , if you have budget you can get a quadcore (yes on the laptop) qaudro fx video, E SATA !! , express card and the most important , a dpc latency under 50us !!

    You can buy a decent laptop nowdays...or build a dedicated bare bones box for a little "loose change". I'd keep the old clunker for net duty, and make th enew one a dedicated music machine.

    If that's your budget... I'd hold off for a while (save up).
    You can spend $300 on an i7 motherboard.
