UM-3EX and UM-3G - Any difference?!

Well in my failing attempt to find a UM550 or UM880, I am probably going to settle for a couple of UM-3EX's linked together. I was about to order only to find that this one is also now discontinued! Apparently, Cakewalk is taking over this box and labeling it the "UM-3G." It looks identical but wondered if there was any difference in the units?

Anyone? Cakewalk reps?

You know, I was just about to ask this same question on this forum. I've been looking for the UM-880 as well...it was one of those rare 8x8 midi interfaces that did it all. I guess they were discontinued back around 2006 so no one carries them anymore and it's very hard to find them on ebay.

The only 8x8 interfaces on the market (as of 2009-05) at the moment are:

MOTU: MIDI Express 128, Express XT, Timepiece AV
    ESI: M8U XL

These were discontinued in recent years:
    Steinberg Midex 8
    Emagic AMT8, Unitor
    M-Audio Midisport USB 8x8
    Edirol UM-880

So it's a bit disappointing to see this market evaporate...I mean there are still a lot of MIDI users and providing anything more than a 3x3 interface is very useful for those with large synth setups. I really hope that Roland (Cakewalk or Edirol) rerelease an 8x8 interface...maybe we should start a petition.

Anyway, back to your original point... I was going to ask if the Edirol UM-3EX can be linked with the Cakewalk UM-3G or vice versa. I mean are they compatible with one another? Are there any functional differences or improvements to the Cakewalk interface?

One more thing I failed to mention is that I also see that the Edirol UM-3EX and Cakewalk UM-3G can fit into a 1/3x3 rackmount kit (called the Roland RAF-70) but no online retailer seems to carry them. Where can I find this??

From the digging I've done, the RAF is toast too. This kinda sucks that there are no decent 8x8 MIDI boxes out there and the only way to get em is to stack 3 of these up... all without a way to mount em - 18 midi cables attached to 3 floating units..... = big mess! I am kinda turned off from the MOTU MIDI stuff from a bad experience I had with a FW audio interface of theirs, plus I hear there are issues. I assume the manufacturers are assuming everyone is just using the USB built into many MIDI devices. Hubbing the ports is not a reliable option. Problem for me is that some of my MIDI guys do not have compatible USB drivers and the only way to go is through a physical MIDI port.

Did anyone find out if the daisy chaining for the UM-3EX or the UM-3G works in Vista 64? The manual leaves this a bit fuzzy...

Apparently the UM-3EX and UM-3G are the same, or are at least compatible with eachother:

    http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/UAUM/UM3G.asp

Check out the pic of the back... it lists the UM-3EX as a chainable device. I'm going to try and buy up an 3EX (since they are like $30 cheaper!)
